Working dedicatedly with menstruation for the last 9+ years at Wreetu, has given me many things. Going from plain lands to hill tracks to haors to conduct awareness and educational sessions on puberty, menstruation and adolescence health, the opportunity to observe and interpret, reflect and adjust took me through a journey of deeper understanding of the cultural similarities, differences and varieties of the narration of menstruation.
Addressing all these were not an easy task through our work but I tried in many forms and formats to battle the myths, misinformation and harmful narration that exist in our society making period as taboo.
One of these efforts is the development of different types of knowledge products on menstruation.
The first I came to work with and authored is 'Girls Puberty Guide'. This is an illustrated story-based book on girls’ growing up with contextual presentation, friendly language and cheerful images. This is the first and only complete book in Bangla language on girls period, puberty and growing up.
This book covers topics starting from all relevant information onset to puberty, physical, psychological and social emotions that affect us at that time. Biological logics for period or menstruation, healthy period management tools and tips, food habits, physical exercise to relieve period pain and all other significant information on puberty and menstruation.
Since its first publication in 2019, we have printed and distributed 35000+ copies around the country.
This book is widely appreciated by the girls, parents, teachers and community. Every year, many local NGOs, INGOs, youth-led organizations and community driven groups are making partnerships with us, purchasing the books and helping thousands of Bangladeshi girls to grow with confidence.
Girls need the right information at the right time and onset to puberty or the menarche is the right fit age for that. If you have programme participants of 9-15 years old girls, committed to uplift their inner strength, giving them the puberty and period education is must.
