From the dawn of my student life ,becoming a doctor was never my determined career choice.But seeing my father serve as a dedicated army doctor, somewhere along the line that decision changed .With a slight wish of getting acquainted with cadet life I decided to join the 2nd batch of Armed Forces Medical College in 1999.Back in the early days of AFMC we saw the ordeals our second home had to go through: crisis of water , electricity in dorm ;lack of proper transport for going to class - still, nothing we couldn’t manage to triumph. Amid these challenges the time spent with friends added bright colors to dorm life . Surely we found the strict and disciplined life of AFMC repulsive then. Yet later on that same discipline shaped the dynamic of my post-graduation life and career. AFMC gave me an abundance of memories to cherish .I encountered some awe-inspiring teachers like Brig Gen Ahsan sir ,Col Sharmin ma’am - to name a few.The magnetic personalities of our teachers and their astounding way of teaching made it possible for us to secure top positions in Dhaka university’s merit list of professional exams.At AFMC we had the platform to cultivate and discover talents we didn’t even know we possessed. Despite the absence of any established clubs ,we were involved in multitude of activities- indoor games , cultural week , outdoor games .Our teachers always encouraged us to organize impressive cultural events for upholding the name of our college with prestige in front of teachers from other medical colleges .I turned out to be an active and keen performer of these events even though I was altogether an introverted person. The best memory from those 5 years was the day our teachers compassionately embraced us after we had passed final prof . And the day we had to leave AFMC in tears, was dreadfully the worst .
The struggle of post-graduation is a direful situation that awaits every doctor after completing internship. The whole journey along with the pressure of deciding on a subject , was definitely toilsome. The imprint left in my mind by my teachers and my father , fueled my passion for choosing medicine. Soon after completing FCPS part 1 in 2007 , I started my training in cardiology at BSMMU. Having spent 1 year at BSMMU, I continued the training at DMC from 2008 to 2010 . For my FCPS course , I luckily accomplished the dream of becoming a student of DMC . Five years of hard work and sacrifice later, in 2012, I became the first student from AFMC to complete FCPS part 2 .I used to carry a divided copy of Davidson in the ward and whenever would come across a patient , I would look up the same case in the book . My advice to juniors would be to utilize any opportunity they find to study cause studying in an organized manner won’t always be possible during their training.
I joined Anwer Khan Modern Medical College as assistant professor of medicine in 2012 and was promoted to associate professor in 2016. Further became an examiner of final professional exam under University of Dhaka and also of OSPE,dissertation, FCPS Medicine part 1 and part 2.
My endeavour in the path of research began when I was an intern at CMH. I was asked by our honourable Brig Gen Mamun Mustafiz sir to write a case report like that of a medical journal. With sir’s prudent guidance I wrote my first case report which got published in Sir Salimullah Medical College’s journal.During my time at BSMMU , I had the golden opportunity to write reports on the many interesting cases I found , which were later published by BSMMU journal . This journey persisted with me to DMC , where I further got to work on other articles . Another milestone was when I became the assistant junior editor of Journal of Medicine by Bangladesh Society of Medicine ,during my training period.Which was succeeded by the post of publication associate of the renowned BCPS journal . After working there for 2 years, I debuted as a journal reviewer, both in Bangladesh and abroad. With time I became a regular reviewer of Annals of Internal Medicine by American College of Physicians and British Medical Journal; additionally of International Journal of Medicine & Medical Science;also of Qatar Medical Journal.There are about 115 publications credited to my name till now and I aspire to achieve more in future. To maintain my publication work and training concurrently was not very obliging but I always found my motivation in seeing the published articles. I believe that to build yourself up as a researcher you have to practice writing in journals first .It’s also essential to take up writing courses for getting a heads-up about article writing.Such courses are provided by Bangladesh Medical Research Council , BIRDEM, icddr,b.There’s also Bangladesh Academy of Science ,where I took some courses.Currently I am working as an editor of BCPS journal and Bangladesh Journal of Medicine, as an executive editor of Anwer Khan Modern Medical College Journal ;also as the editorial associate of Journal of Medicine.
My battle against COVID-19 as a front-line fighter throughout this whole time was as challenging as it can be imagined. Nevertheless, that didn’t hold me back from serving my country; only exception was the month when I myself fell victim to this disease and had to be admitted to hospital with severe pneumonia . After recovering I resumed my regular duties at Anwer Khan Modern Medical College, which was the very first private hospital to treat COVID patients. I always took enough safety measures to protect my daughter , my wife and my parents.Because in my view,the only way to fight though this situation is to be cautious not just for ourselves but also for our family .
While glancing over the years gone by, I could not find any regrets so far. Because I have learned to always take everything positively and find inspirations for myself to go forward.I acknowledge the medical profession as a gift given by Almighty. The glory of this profession lies in being able to serve people. “A doctor never retires , when he retires it’s from life”, that’s the motto I perpetually cling to.
ছাত্রজীবনের শুরু থেকে চিকিৎসা পেশায় আসাটা কখনোই আমার স্বপ্ন ছিল না। কিন্তু বাবা বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনীর একজন চিকিৎসক হওয়াতে তা হয়ত আমার মনে অজান্তেই রেখাপাত করেছিল। ছোটবেলা থেকেই ক্যাডেট কলেজের প্রতি সূক্ষ্ম আকর্ষণ আমাকে আর্মড ফোর্সেস মেডিকেল কলেজের দ্বিতীয় ব্যাচের একজন ক্যাডেট হিসেবে যোগদান করতে উদ্বুদ্ধ করে। এএফএমসি তখন একটি নতুন প্রতিষ্ঠান হিসেবে তার কঠিনতম সময়ের মধ্য দিয়ে যাচ্ছিল। তখন পানি, বিদ্যুৎ, যাতায়াত ব্যবস্থার অপ্রতুলতাসহ বিভিন্ন ধরণের প্রতিবন্ধকতা ছিল। কিন্তু ডর্মে বন্ধুদের সাথে কাটানো রঙ্গিন সময়গুলোই এসব প্রতিবন্ধকতাকে ছাপিয়ে আমাদেরকে নতুন এক সময় ও অভিজ্ঞতার সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়। এএফএমসির কঠোর নিয়মকানুন ও নিয়মতান্ত্রিক জীবনের সাথে প্রথমদিকে মানিয়ে নিতে কষ্ট হলেও পরবর্তীতে এটাই আমার ভবিষ্যত জীবন ও পেশার ক্ষেত্রে মজবুত ভিত্তি তৈরি করেছে।
এএফএমসিতে আমি কিছু অসাধারণ টিচারের সান্নিধ্য পেয়েছি। তাঁদের মধ্যে ব্রিগেডিয়ার জেনারেল (অব)আহসান স্যার, লেফটেন্ট কর্ণেল শারমিন ম্যাডাম, লেফটেন্ট কর্ণেল মাহমুদা ম্যাডামের নাম উল্লেখযোগ্য। তাঁদের অসাধারণ ব্যক্তিত্ববোধ ও শিক্ষাদান পদ্ধতি পেশাগত পরীক্ষাগুলোয় ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মেধা তালিকায় আমাদেরকে এএফএমসির নাম উজ্জ্বল করাতে ভূমিকা রেখেছিল।
সময়ের সাথে সাথে এএফএমসির ক্যাম্পাস আমাদের সুপ্ত প্রতিভাগুলোকে ধীরে ধীরে একটি পূর্ণতা দান করেছিল। তখন আমাদের কোন ক্লাব ছিল না। কিন্তু ইনডোর-আউটডোর গেমস ও কালচারাল উইকগুলোতে আমরা সপ্তাহজুড়ে অংশগ্রহণ করতাম। তার জন্য সারা বছর ধরেই অল্প অল্প করে প্রস্তুতি চলতো। আমাদের টিচাররা কালচারাল প্রোগামগুলো আয়োজন করার জন্য আমাদেরকে সবসময়ই উৎসাহ দিতেন। এসব অনুষ্ঠানগুলোতে তখন অন্যান্য মেডিকেল কলেজের শ্রদ্ধেয় প্রিন্সিপ্যাল ও টিচাররা আসতেন যা এএফএমসির জন্য অত্যন্ত মর্যাদাকর ছিল। এখানে ভর্তি হওয়ার পর প্রথমদিকে কিছুদিন জড়তা কাজ করলেও একসময় আমিও এসব কার্যক্রমের সাথে পুরোপুরি জড়িয়ে গিয়েছিলাম। এএফএমসির পাঁচ বছরের জীবনে সবচেয়ে আনন্দদায়ক স্মৃতি বোধহয় যেদিন আমরা চূড়ান্ত পেশাগত পরীক্ষায় পাশ করেছিলাম। আর যেদিন এই ক্যাম্পাস থেকে চলে যাচ্ছিলাম, সেদিন থেকেই তা আমার জীবনের সবচেয়ে দুঃখজনক স্মৃতি হয়ে আমাকে প্রতিনিয়ত নাড়া দিতে থাকলো।
আমি যখন সিএমএইচে ইন্টার্ন ডাক্তার হিসেবে ছিলাম তখন থেকেই আমার প্রথম রিসার্চের কাজ শুরু হয়। ব্রিগেডিয়ার জেনারেল (অব) মামুন মোস্তাফিজ স্যার আমাকে মেডিকেল জার্নালের মত করে একটা কেইস রিপোর্ট লিখতে বলেছিলেন। স্যারের সঠিক নির্দেশনায় আমি রিপোর্টটা লিখেছিলাম যা স্যার সলিমুল্লাহ মেডিকেল কলেজের জার্নালে প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল। বিএসএমএমইউতে থাকাকালীন আমাকে বিভিন্ন ধরণের কেইসের সম্মুখীন হতে হয়েছিল। আমি সেগুলোর ওপরেও রিপোর্ট লিখেছিলাম যেগুলো পরবর্তীতে বিএসএমএমইউ এর জার্নালে প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল। ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজে থাকাকালীনও আমি এই রিসার্চের সাথে জড়িত ছিলাম। আমার জীবনের অন্যতম মাইলফলক হল যখন আমি বাংলাদেশ সোসাইটি অব মেডিসেনের জার্নালে 'অ্যাসিস্ট্যান্ট জুনিয়র ইডিটর' হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করি। পরবর্তীতে আমি বিখ্যাত বিসিপিএস জার্নালের 'পাবলিকেশন অ্যাসোসিয়েট' হিসেবেও দায়িত্ব পালন করেছি।
সময়ের সাথে সাথে আমি আমেরিকান কলেজ অফ ফিজিশিয়ান্স এর ইন্টারনাল মেডিসিনের বার্ষিক জার্নাল, ব্রিটিশ মেডিকেল জার্নাল, ইন্টারন্যাশনাল জার্নাল অব মেডিসিন অ্যান্ড মেডিকেল সাইন্স এবং কাতার মেডিকেল জার্নালের নিয়মিত রিভিউয়ার হিসেবে নিযুক্ত ছিলাম। এখন পর্যন্ত আমার ১১৫ টি পাবলিকেশন প্রকাশিত হয়েছে এবং ভবিষ্যতে রিসার্চের ক্ষেত্রে আমি আরও একনিষ্ঠ অবদান রাখতে চাই। ট্রেইনিং এবং পাবলিকেশন নিয়ে একসাথে কাজ করা তখন সহজ বিষয় ছিল না। কিন্তু ইতোমধ্যে যে আর্টিকেলগুলো প্রকাশিত হয়েছে সেগুলোই ছিল আমার জন্য সবেচেয়ে বড় অনুপ্রেরণা। আমি মনে করি যে একজন রিসার্চার হিসেবে নিজেকে গড়ে তোলার জন্য প্রথম থেকেই জার্নালে আর্টিকেল লেখার অভ্যাস করতে হবে। পাশাপাশি আর্টিকেল লেখা সম্পর্কে বাংলাদেশ মেডিকেল রিসার্চ কাউন্সিল, বার্ডেম, আইসিডিডিআরবির আয়োজন করা বিভিন্ন কোর্সেও অংশ নেয়া প্রয়োজন। আমি বাংলাদেশ একাডেমি অব সাইন্স থেকেও কিছু কোর্স করেছিলাম। বর্তমানে আমি বাংলাদেশ জার্নাল অব মেডিসিন এবং বিসিপিএস জার্নালের ইডিটর হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছি। এছাড়াও আমি আনোয়ার খান মর্ডান মেডিকেল কলেজ জার্নালের এক্সিকিউটিভ ইডিটর ও জার্নাল অব মেডিসিনের সহযোগী ইডিটর হিসেবে নিযুক্ত আছি।
মেডিসিনকে সাবজেক্ট হিসেবে বেছে নেয়ার ব্যাপারে প্রধান অনুপ্রেরণা ছিল আমার বাবা এবং টিচাররা। মেডিসিনের প্রতি তাঁদের একনিষ্ঠতা আমাকে খুব সহজেই এ পথে আসতে প্রভাবিত করেছিল। আমি ২০০৭ সালে এফসিপিএস ফার্স্ট পার্ট সম্পন্ন করি এবং প্রফেসর কে.এম.এইচ.এস সিরাজুল হক স্যারের অধীনে বিএসএমএমইউতে কার্ডিওলজির ওপর ট্রেইনিং শুরু করি। সেই ধারাবাহিকতায় ২০০৮ সালে ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজে প্রফেসর দীন মোহাম্মদ স্যার এবং পরবর্তী দুবছর প্রফেসর কাজী তরিকুল ইসলাম স্যার ও প্রফেসর এফ.এম সিদ্দিকী স্যারের অধীনে ট্রেইনিং করি। ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজের এই ট্রেইনিংগুলোর এন্ট্রেন্স এক্সামে আমি প্রথম স্থান অধিকার করি যা ছিল আমার জন্য খুবই সৌভাগ্যের বিষয়। এফসিপিএস ট্রেইনিং এর সুবাদে আমার ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজের ছাত্র হওয়ার স্বপ্নটাও অবশেষে পূরণ হয়। সঠিক দিক নির্দেশনা ও অনুপ্রেরণা যোগানোর জন্য আমি প্রফেসর আজিজুল কাহহার স্যার, প্রফেসর এইচ.এ.এম নাজমুল আহসান স্যার এবং প্রফেসর খান আবুল কালাম আজাদ স্যারের কাছেও চির কৃতজ্ঞ।
পাঁচ বছরের কঠোর পরিশ্রম ও আত্মত্যাগের পর অবশেষে ২০১২ সালে আমি আর্মড ফোর্সেস মেডিকেল কলেজের প্রথম ছাত্র হিসেবে এফসিপিএস সেকেণ্ড পার্ট সম্পন্ন করি। জুনিয়রদের প্রতি আমার পরামর্শ থাকবে যে তারা যেন পড়াশোনার জন্য প্রত্যেকটা মুহুর্তের সদ্ব্যবহার করে। কারণ ট্রেইনিং চলাকালীন শুধু একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে পরিকল্পনা করে পড়াশোনা করার সুযোগ থাকে না। আমি যখন ওয়ার্ডে থাকতাম তখন সবসময় সাথে ড্যাভিডসন রাখতাম। যখনই কোন পেশেন্টকে দেখতাম, সাথে সাথে একই ধরণের কেইস ড্যাভিডসন থেকে পড়ে ফেলতাম।
আমি ২০১২ সালে আনোয়ার খান মর্ডান মেডিকেল কলেজের মেডিসিন বিভাগের সহকারী অধ্যাপক হিসেবে যোগদান করি এবং ২০১৬ সাথে সহযোগী অধ্যাপক পদে উন্নীত হই। পরবর্তীতে আমি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধীনে চূড়ান্ত পেশাগত পরীক্ষা এবং এফসিপিএস এর 'অসপি' ও 'ডিসারটেশন' পরীক্ষার পরীক্ষক হিসেবে নিযুক্ত হই।
কোভিড-১৯ এর বিরুদ্ধে সামনের কাতারের একজন যোদ্ধা হিসেবে আমার গল্পটা ঠিক অন্য চিকিৎসকদের মতই অকল্পনীয়। প্রথম থেকেই দেশের মানুষকে সেবা দেয়ার জন্য আমি নিজেকে নিবেদিত রাখার চেষ্টা করেছি। এ সেবাদানে কিছুটা ব্যাঘাত ঘটে যখন আমি নিজেই করোনা ভাইরাসে আক্রান্ত হয়ে তীব্র নিউমোনিয়া নিয়ে হাসপাতালে ভর্তি হই। সুস্থ হওয়ার পর আমি আবারো আমার কর্মস্থল আনোয়ার খান মর্ডান মেডিকেল কলেজে ফিরে যাই। উল্লেখ্য, এটিই প্রাইভেট হাসপাতালগুলোর মধ্যে সর্বপ্রথম করোনা আক্রান্ত রোগীদের জন্য চিকিৎসা শুরু করে। আমি আমার পরিবারের সদস্যদের এ ভাইরাস থেকে নিরাপদ রাখার জন্য নিজেও সবসময় সুরক্ষা সামগ্রী ব্যাবহার করেছি। আমার মনে হয় এ ভাইরাসকে প্রতিহত করার একমাত্র উপায় হচ্ছে নিজের নিরাপত্তার পাশাপাশি পরিবারের সদস্যদের নিরাপত্তার কথাও চিন্তা করা এবং সেই অনুযায়ী প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা নেয়া।
চিকিৎসা পেশায় এতগুলো বছর পার করার পর আমি উপলব্ধি করতে পারি যে আমার ভেতরে কোন হতাশা অথবা অপ্রাপ্তি নেই। আমি সবসময়ই জীবনের প্রত্যেকটি বিষয়কে ইতিবাচকভাবে নিতে শিখেছি এবং নিজেকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে সামনের দিকে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার চেষ্টা করেছি। এজন্য আমি পেশাটিকে আমার জন্য স্রষ্টা প্রদত্ত একটি সুবর্ণ সুযোগ হিসেবে মনে করি। মানুষকে সেবা করে যাওয়াই এই পেশার একমাত্র মাহাত্ম্য। আমি গভীরভাবে বিশ্বাস করি- "একজন চিকিৎসক কখনো অবসরে যান না। যখন তিনি অবসরে যান, সেটা অবশ্যই তার নিজের জীবন থেকে!"
