Grameen Kalyan Grameen Kalyan is a “not for profit” company established in 1996 under the Companies Act, 1994 of Bangladesh.

The Nobel Laureate and founder of Grameen Bank (GB) Prof. Muhammad Yunus is the founder and chairman of Grameen Kalyan (GK). GK is also registered under the Foreign Donation (Voluntary Activities) Regulation Ordinance, 1978 from NGO Affairs Bureau of Bangladesh. Grameen Kalyan (GK) means "Grameen Wellbeing" and is performing various activities for the welfare of Grameen Bank (GB) borrowers and it

s employees. In addition to various other activities GK is providing primary healthcare services, especially focusing on the poor living in rural communities. GK is providing quality and affordable primary healthcare services to the less privileged population in the rural area since its inception and pioneering a micro health insurance system. Currently the health program represents the most significant activity of GK but other services in the area of education, entrepreneurship and even forestry are also part of its services. In the late Nineties a study identified that without improvement of the health condition of the poor it wouldn’t be possible to keep the poor out of poverty for a long time. Microcredit immediately and directly addresses poverty, but for sustainable poverty reduction, the health issue must also be addressed. Accordingly, in 1993 an action research project on the Rural Health Program (RHP) was launched by Grameen Trust and based on its positive results, Grameen Kalyan took over the responsibility for the rural health program from Grameen Trust in 1997.
