Recently attended the inaugural St. Jude Global Academy Qualitative Research In-Person Training Program in Nairobi, Kenya — and what an amazing experience it was! ✨

Time just flew by, and the learning, discussions, and shared moments were truly enriching. Grateful for the opportunity to connect, reflect, and grow with such an inspiring group.

Honestly, this has been one of the best workshops I have ever attended. Already looking forward to more collaborations in the future! 🌍💛

Sometimes, compassion surprises us in the sweetest ways… 💕

Palliative Care Assistants (PCAs) are truly the heart of community-based palliative care. Their compassion goes beyond just patients—it extends to all living beings in need. 🐾

One of our amazing PCAs in the pediatric palliative care program was recently spotted carefully applying antiseptic powder to an injured dog on the roadside.

Her dream? To one day build a care home for stray animals. 🏡

Isn’t that just beautiful? Compassion knows no boundaries! 💕

স্ত্রী : এতোগুলো কাপড় ধোয়ার জন্য ফেলে রেখোনা।

স্বামী : কেন?

স্ত্রী : খালা (বুয়া) আগামী ২দিন আসবেন না।

স্বামী : কেন?

স্ত্রী : তিনি মেয়ের বাড়িতে নাতনীকে দেখতে যাবেন।

স্বামী : ওকে! তাহলে কিছু কাপড় আমি নিজেই ধুয়ে ফেলবো।

স্ত্রী : আমি কি উনাকে ১০০০টাকা অতিরিক্ত দিতে পারি???

স্বামী : কেন? সামনে তো ঈদ! তখন তো তাকে এমনিতেই বোনাস দিতে হবে!

স্ত্রী : মেয়ে আর নাতনীকে দেখতে যাবেন। যাওয়ার সময় হয়তো তাদের জন্য কিছু নিয়ে যাবেন। আজকাল সবকিছুর যা দাম বাড়তি।যাওয়ার সময় টাকার প্রয়োজন হবে!

স্বামী : তুমি অতি সহজেই ইমোশনাল হয়ে পড়ো!

স্ত্রী : ওহ জান! তুমি চিন্তা করোনা,তোমাকে অতিরিক্ত খরচ করতে হবেনা।আজ বিকেলে রেস্টুরেন্টে পিজ্জা খাওয়ার যে কথাটা ছিলো, সেটা আমি খাবোনা। কেন শুধু শুধু কয়েক টুকরো ব্রেড খাওয়ার জন্য এতোগুলো টাকা খরচ করবো।সেই টাকাটা আমরা খালাকে (বুয়াকে) দিয়ে দিবো।

স্বামী : তোমার যা ইচ্ছে করো।

বুয়া ৩দিন পরে বাসায় আসলো। এসেই ঘর-দোর পরিস্কার করতে লেগে গেলো।

স্বামী বুয়াকে জিজ্ঞেস করলো: " আপনার ছুটি কেমন কেটেছে? "

বুয়া: মামা অনেক ভালো কেটেছে। আমি যাওয়ার সময় আম্মা(স্ত্রী) আমাকে ১০০০টাকা দিয়েছেন! "

স্বামী : তাই আপনি মেয়ে এবং নাতনীর সাথে দেখা করতে গিয়েছেন?

বুয়া: জী,মামা। অনেক মজা হয়েছে, ২ দিনে সবটা টাকা খরচ হয়েছে!

স্বামী : তাই? কি কি করলেন ১০০০ টাকা দিয়ে শুনি?
বুয়া: ৩০০ টাকা দিয়ে নাতনীর জন্য একটা জামা কিনেছি, ৮০ টাকা দিয়ে একটা পুতুল নিয়েছি, ২০০ টাকার মিষ্টি কিনেছি, ১৫০ টাকা দিয়ে মেয়ের জন্য চুড়ি কিনেছি, ১২০ টাকা বাস ভাড়া এবং ১৫০ টাকা নাতনীর স্কুলের খাতা-কলম কেনার জন্য দিয়েছি।

এভাবে বুয়া সবটা টাকার হিসেব দিয়ে দিলো।

বিকেলে যখন সে স্ত্রীকে নিয়ে পিজ্জা খেতে গেলো, ওয়েটার পিজ্জা দেওয়ার পর সে আশ্চর্য হলো! আট টুকরো পিজ্জার দিকে তাকিয়ে তার সকালবেলায় বুয়ার কথাগুলো মনে পড়লো!....
সে আট পিস পিজ্জার দিকে তাকিয়ে রইলো...
১ম পিস পিজ্জা দিয়ে ১টা শিশুর নতুন পোশাক...
২য় পিস পিজ্জা দিয়ে ১টা শিশুর জন্য মিষ্টি...
৩য় পিস পিজ্জা দিয়ে একটা শিশুর স্কুলের খাতা....
৪র্থ পিস পিজ্জা দিয়ে খেলার পুতুল...
৫ম পিস পিজ্জা দিয়ে বাস ভাড়া...
এভাবে কতোকিছু সম্ভব!

আট টুকরো পিজ্জা যেন তার মনকে হাতুড়ির মতো আঘাত করছিলো।এতোদিন সে পিজ্জাকে এক দৃষ্টি থেকে দেখতো,আজ বুয়া তাকে পিজ্জার অন্যদিকটাও দেখিয়ে দিয়েছে।আট টুকরো পিজ্জা তাকে লাইফের নতুন অর্থ শিখিয়েছে।

আজ সে বুঝতে পারলো -
এক টুকরো পিজ্জার দামে যতখানি তৃপ্তি পাওয়া যায় না,
তারচেয়ে অনেক বেশি তৃপ্তি মেলে কারো জীবনে একটু আলো ছড়িয়ে দিতে পারলে।

"Spending for life! " or " life for spending".

Feeling truly honoured to be invited as a panelist at the Annual Academic Sessions 2025 of the College of Palliative Medicine of Sri Lanka (CPMSL), taking place on 20th September at the beautiful Galle Face Hotel in Colombo. 🌸

I’ll be sharing thoughts (virtually) on “Community based palliative care” during the plenary session “Advancing Palliative Care: Global Reflections on Policy, Practice, and People.”
