Happea Nutrition

Happea Nutrition I am Paula Doebrich, a Registered Dietitian, Public Health Nutritionist and the founder of Happea Nutrition: a private nutrition practice in New York City.

Private nutrition practice by Paula Doebrich, MPH, RDN specializing in personalized nutrition, nutrigenomics and helping you improve your relationship with food. Before starting my journey towards becoming a dietitian, I worked as a model internationally. This experience allowed me to live in many places around the globe but I also felt a lot of pressure to look a certain way. Up until my early twenties, I was a chronic dieter and always looking for the hottest diet-trends. Today, this helps me understand where my clients are coming from. I want to help others avoid the misery I went through. As a dietitian, I focus on a highly personalized approach to each person I work with. I am passionate about helping people feel better about their choices. I believe that a healthy lifestyle is one that allows for a bowl of salad and a slice of cake equally and doesn't make you feel guilty about your choices. I also use nutrigenomics (DNA tests) in my practice because I believe it is the future of nutrition. I hope to empower my clients to feel good by finding a lifestyle that works long-term. The nutrition space can be very confusing, so I try my best to provide people with reliable and easy-to-digest information. I believe that being healthy is only possible when you enjoy your lifestyle. Restriction doesn't work long term and is not necessary to feel good in your body. I accept clients on a case-to-case basis. You can schedule an intro call or contact me to inquire about services.

Of course people didn’t enjoy me sharing that the dirty dozen is trash yesterday. Well, I’m not sorry. Here is why this list is nothing but fear mongering.⁣
⁣
Who eats 4723 peaches per day, every day?! Nobody. Nobody eats even close to what you would need to eat to reach any significant level of pesticide residue that may be harmful to human health. This data is completely manipulated to make it look scary. It’s not. Conventional produce is safe and nobody is trying to poison you. Who would they sell their products to if we were all poisoned?!⁣
⁣
Please remember that organic produce uses pesticides and those are not measured or controlled nearly as strictly as pesticides used in conventional farming. Some changes are supposed to be coming but we will see about that. Organic farming also needs to use more pesticides because they are weaker, often resulting in levels far more significant for human health and environmental health.⁣
⁣
It is important to be an informed consumer, and part of that is not allowing to be brainwashed by organizations just because they put ā€œorganicā€ on their banner.⁣

Lessons about food freedom⁣
⁣
I don’t often talk about my own journey but this weekend made me reflect. Five years ago I would have never been able to enjoy the food on this trip. Ten years ago I probably wouldn’t have touched most of it. I started my own journey towards food freedom, or what I thought it was, years ago. But I only started feeling truly content around 4 years ago when I let go of my last food rules. Here are my biggest learnings.⁣
⁣
Lesson 1: you can’t have food rules that make your life harder and pursue food freedom. I’m not talking about knowing what’s best for you or following ā€œrulesā€ that are necessary like when you have an allergy. But not eating any gluten or dairy for no reason AND pursuing food freedom is contradictory⁣
⁣
Lesson 2: Feeling free around food is not what most people think it is: eating whatever you want anytime all the time. It’s knowing what is right for you at any given moment. Sometimes you know you need a more balanced meal and you feel free to have one without labeling it as a diet. Other times you want a burger and fries and you can also have it without calling it a cheat meal.⁣
⁣
Lesson 3: it’s hard to unlearn the rules we have followed for years. Most of us are conditioned to believe that food has some sort of moral value. That eating ā€œjunkā€ makes us bad people. That it’s our fault if we get sick because we didn’t live on organic produce. It takes a lot of strength to unlearn all that and you need the right people around you to support you.⁣
⁣
Lesson 4: it’s so worth it. I am finally at a point where I’m able to focus on the things that matter: the sights, the people, the adventure etc. when traveling instead of planning meals. There’s nothing more freeing than being able to have ice cream for lunch because there’s nothing else and you are hungry (true story) and still enjoy your vacation.⁣
⁣
I’m sharing this because I hope it inspires you to keep going. Food freedom is worth it and makes it so much easier to know how to best care for your body. Sometimes that’s a salad, other times it’s knowing there are more important things in life than the perfect meal⁣

There's been so much buzz about eating late in the media recently that I decided to write my own article. The newly published studies that were often mistakenly cited as definitive proof of a relationship between eating at a certain time and weight gain. The research on "chrono-nutrition" is still in its infancy, so we have to be careful to make conclusions on causality here. We just don't know if this will turn out to be meaningful on a population level. Does it matter more what time you eat, or what your meal is composed of and whether you are meeting your nutrient goals? I am leaning towards the latter but will wait for more research to make statements ;)

There has been a lot of buzz around timing of meals recently, especially after two studies were published in October. One suggesting that eating late may be directly related to weight gain and another suggesting that eating late may change hunger and appetite but does not impact weight.

Supplements were never meant to replace a balanced diet but to supplement it in situations where appropriate intake was not possible (hence the name). Today, you see companies promoting their supplements with "replaces all the vegetables you should eat". I can guarantee you that drinking a green mixture will not have the same benefit as eating a diet rich in a diverse variety of fruits and veggies and should only be done when no other resources are available. read more about the downsides of supplements in this article:

Stress is one of the most overlooked health risk factors because it's so normalized. It shouldn't be overlooked because chronic stress affects every system in the body. It can influence our hormones, heart health, weight and health behavior. Read more in my latest blog post!

When it comes to preventive health, we usually think about diet and physical activity. However, what you eat and how active you are is only one piece of a much bigger puzzle. Other factors, such as sleep, hormones, genes, culture, food access, and stress, influence health and weight. Particularly, s...

Friday humor time but there is some truth in every joke, including this one.⁣
⁣
Many of you may be trying to frantically ā€œget in shapeā€ as summer is officially startling this weekend. But if experience has told us all anything it’s that starving yourself only leads you to bouncing back and obsessing over food all summer long…⁣
⁣
Maybe this year is the year you actually give your body what it needs, accept that if you need to lose weight, it will be a long process, and maybe in the meantime, you should get a new bikini that actually fits your current body.⁣
⁣
Happy Memorial Day weekend!⁣

There is no right or wrong way to eat healthy. In a world where everyone can give advice, it’s easy to fall into the comparison trap. But you can absolutely dislike a lot of healthy food and still eat a balanced diet! A healthy diet should work around your needs and as long as your preferences aren’t too extreme, you will probably find a balanced diet that works for you.⁣
⁣
Here’s a confession: I’m a dietitian and I don’t like kale, I also hate green smoothies, find the texture of eegs appalling, and might eat a shoe before I eat an oyster. Nobody truly likes everything. That’s fine. It’s about working around these preferences to find balance.⁣
⁣
That’s why working with a dietitian in worth it. We know how to work with any food preference and still achieve a balanced diet. Because we spent years in school learning all about foods and how to meet nutrition needs with limited resources. This is knowledge you just don’t get from a quick online class in nutrition because it takes years of practicešŸ˜‰.⁣
