মাছ চাষের জন্য প্রথমে উপযুক্ত জমিতে পুকুর খনন বা সংস্কার করতে হয়। এরপর আগাছা, খাদক মাছ ও অপ্রয়োজনীয় জিনিস পরিষ্কার করে পানির গুণমান ঠিক রাখতে চুন ও জৈবসার প্রয়োগ করা হয়। ভালো জাতের স্বাস্থ্যবান পোনা নির্ধারিত হারে মজুদ করতে হয়। প্রতিদিন নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণে সুষম খাবার ও বিশুদ্ধ পানি সরবরাহ জরুরি। পানির রঙ, অক্সিজেন, pH পর্যবেক্ষণ করে প্রয়োজন অনুযায়ী ব্যবস্থা নিতে হয়। রোগ প্রতিরোধে সতর্কতা এবং নিয়মিত জাল টেনে মাছের বৃদ্ধি পরীক্ষা করতে হয়। নির্দিষ্ট সময় পরে বাজারজাত করার জন্য পরিপক্ব মাছ সংগ্রহ করা হয়। সফলভাবে মাছ চাষের জন্য প্রতিটি ধাপই খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
