🔬 Common Mistakes in Phlebotomy (and How to Avoid Them)

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist, I’ve learned that even small errors during blood collection can significantly affect patient results. Accuracy starts from the moment we hold the needle.

Here are some common mistakes—and how we can prevent them:

🩸 1. Hemolysis:
One of the most frequent issues in sample rejection.
Causes: Rough handling, using a small needle, forceful transfer of blood
Prevention: Use correct needle size, avoid shaking tubes, handle samples gently

🏷️ 2. Wrong Labeling:
A critical error that can lead to serious consequences.
Prevention: Always label samples immediately at the bedside and verify patient identity carefully

🔄 3. Improper Mixing:
Incorrect mixing can lead to clotting or inaccurate results
Prevention: Gently invert tubes according to recommended guidelines (do not shake)

⚠️ In the laboratory, precision is not optional—it’s essential. Every step we take directly impacts patient diagnosis and treatment.
