Cirrhosis is a complication of long-term inflammation of the liver. It results in the replacement of healthy liver tissue with scar tissue, called fibrosis. While heavy long-term alcohol use is a common cause of cirrhosis, many other diseases and liver conditions can lead to cirrhosis.

Symptoms
Cirrhosis often has no symptoms until liver damage is serious. When symptoms do happen, they may include:
* Extreme tiredness.
* Easily bleeding or bruising.
* Loss of appetite.
* Nausea.
* Swelling in the legs, feet or ankles, called edema.
* Weight loss.
* Itchy skin.
* Yellowing of the skin and eyes, called jaundice.
* Fluid buildup in the belly, called ascites (uh-SY-teez).
* Spiderlike blood vessels on the skin, called spider angiomas.
* Redness in the palms of the hands.
* Pale fingernails, especially the thumb and index finger.
* Clubbing of the fingers, in which the fingertips spread out and become rounder than usual.
* Confusion, drowsiness or slurred speech.
S*xual problems may affect both men and women with cirrhosis. In men, erectile dysfunction, loss of s*x drive and shrinkage of the testicles are common. A type of breast enlargement called gynecomastiaalso may occur.
In women, low s*x drive, painful in*******se, inability to reach or**sm and lack of ovulation may occur. Women also may lose their periods, even when they're not in menopause.

Cirrhosis & Liver Transplant — When to Act?
* If cirrhosis has no complications → Transplant usually not needed.
* First complication like ascites → Start transplant evaluation.
* Bleeding or encephalopathy → Strong indication for transplant.
* Multiple complications → Liver transplant becomes life-saving.

⚠️ Early consultation with a liver transplant specialist can save life.

23/04/2026

Sarcoma Overview :
Sarcoma refers to a broad group of cancers that start in the bones and soft tissues. Soft tissues connect, support and surround other body structures. Soft tissues include muscle, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons and the lining of the joints. Cancer that starts in the soft tissue is called soft tissue sarcoma.
There are many types of sarcomas. They can happen in many parts of the body. Treatment for sarcoma varies depending on sarcoma type, where it is and other factors.
# Types
*Angiosarcoma
*Chondrosarcoma
*Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans
*Desmoplastic small round cell tumors
*Epithelioid sarcoma
*Ewing sarcoma
*Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)
*Kaposi sarcoma
*Leiomyosarcoma
*Liposarcoma
*Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST)
*Myxofibrosarcoma
*Osteosarcoma
*Rhabdomyosarcoma
*Soft tissue sarcoma
*Solitary fibrous tumor
*Synovial sarcoma
*Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma
# Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of sarcoma include:
>A lump that can be felt through the skin that may or may not be painful.
>Bone pain.
>A bone that breaks with no clear cause, such as with a minor injury or no injury.
>Belly pain.
>Weight loss.
# Causes
It's not clear what causes sarcoma. This cancer starts as a growth of cells in the bones and soft tissues.
Sarcoma happens when cells develop changes in their DNA. A cell's DNA holds the instructions that tell the cell what to do. In healthy cells, the DNA tells the cells to grow and multiply at a set rate. The DNA also tells the cells to die at a set time.
In cancer cells, the DNA changes give other instructions. The changes tell the cancer cells to grow and multiply quickly. Cancer cells can keep living when healthy cells would die. This causes too many cells.
The cancer cells might form a mass called a tumor. The tumor can grow to invade and destroy healthy body tissue. In time, cancer cells can break away and spread to other parts of the body. When cancer spreads, it's called metastatic cancer.

World Liver Day :
The liver
The liver is an organ that sits just under the rib cage on the right side of the abdomen. It can weigh up to 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms). The liver is needed to help digest food, rid the body of waste products and make substances, called clotting factors, that keep the blood flowing well, among other tasks.
Liver disease can be passed through families, called inherited. Anything that damages the liver also can cause liver problems, including viruses, alcohol use and obesity
Over time, conditions that damage the liver can lead to scarring, called cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can lead to liver failure, a life-threatening condition. But early treatment may give the liver time to heal.
# Symptoms
Liver disease doesn't always cause symptoms that can be seen or felt. If there are symptoms of liver disease, they may include:
*Yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes, called jaundice. Yellowing of the skin might be harder to see on Black or brown skin.
*Belly pain and swelling.
*Swelling in the legs and ankles.
*Itchy skin.
*Dark urine.
*Pale stool.
*Constant tiredness.
*Nausea or vomiting.
*Loss of appetite.
*Bruising easily.
# When to see a doctor
Make an appointment with your healthcare professional if you have any lasting symptoms that worry you. Seek medical help right away if you have belly pain that is so bad that you can't stay still.

Liver disease has many causes.

*Infection
Parasites and viruses can infect the liver, causing swelling and irritation, called inflammation. Inflammation keeps the liver from working as it should. The viruses that cause liver damage can be spread through blood or semen, bad food or water, or close contact with a person who is infected.
The most common types of liver infection are hepatitis viruses, including:
*Hepatitis A.
*Hepatitis B.
*Hepatitis C.
*Immune system condition
Diseases in which the immune system attacks certain parts of the body are called autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune liver diseases include:

*Autoimmune hepatitis.
*Primary biliary cholangitis.
*Primary sclerosing cholangitis.
Genetics
A changed gene from one or both parents can cause substances to build up in the liver. This can cause liver damage. Genetic liver diseases include:

*Hemochromatosis.
*Wilson's disease.
*Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
*Cancer and other growths
Examples include:
*Liver cancer.
*Bile duct cancer.
*Liver adenoma.
# Other common causes of liver disease include:

Long-term alcohol use.
Fat that builds up in the liver, called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, formerly nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
*Certain prescription or other medicines.
*Certain herbal mixes.
*Being in contact often with toxic chemicals.
*Factors that can increase the risk of liver disease include:
*Ongoing moderate or heavy alcohol use.
*Obesity.
*Type 2 diabetes.
*Tattoos or body piercings.
*Shared needles to inject drugs.
*Blood transfusion before 1992.
*Contact with other people's blood and body fluids.
*S*x without protection.
*Contact with chemicals or toxins.
*Family history of liver disease.
# Complications
Complications of liver disease depend on the cause of the liver problems. Without treatment, liver disease may progress to liver failure. Liver failure can be fatal.

To prevent liver disease:

If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation. For healthy adults, that means up to one drink a day for women and up to two drinks a day for men.
Avoid risky behavior. Use a condom during s*x. If you get tattoos or body piercings, pick a shop that's clean and safe. Seek help if you shoot illicit drugs. Don't share needles to shoot drugs.
Get vaccinated. If you're at increased risk of getting hepatitis, talk with your healthcare professional about getting the hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines. This also is true if you've been infected with any form of the hepatitis virus.
Be careful when taking medicines. Take prescription and other medicines only when needed. Take only as much as directed. Don't mix medicines and alcohol. Talk with your healthcare provider before mixing herbal supplements or prescription or other medicines.
Stay away from other people's blood and body fluids. Hepatitis viruses can be spread by accidental needle sticks or poor cleanup of blood or body fluids.
Keep your food safe. Wash your hands well before eating or making foods. If traveling in a resource-poor country, use bottled water to drink, wash your hands and brush your teeth.
Take care with aerosol sprays. Make sure to use these products in an open area. Wear a mask when spraying insecticides, fungicides, paint and other toxic chemicals. Always follow the maker's instructions.
Protect your skin. When using insecticides and other toxic chemicals, wear gloves, long sleeves, a hat and a mask so that chemicals don't get on your skin.
Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity can cause nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, now called metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease.

Good liver health is built through the choices you make every day. From balanced meals and regular movement to hydration and preventive check-ups, every small step helps for the future.

17/04/2026

Hemophilia is a rare disorder in which the blood doesn't clot in the typical way because it doesn't have enough blood-clotting proteins (clotting factors). If you have hemophilia, you might bleed for a longer time after an injury than you would if your blood clotted properly.
Advertisement
Mayo Clinic does not endorse companies or products. Advertising revenue supports our not-for-profit mission.

Small cuts usually aren't much of a problem. If you have a severe form of the condition, the main concern is bleeding inside your body, especially in your knees, ankles and elbows. Internal bleeding can damage your organs and tissues and be life-threatening.
Hemophilia is almost always a genetic disorder. Treatment includes regular replacement of the specific clotting factor that is reduced. Newer therapies that don't contain clotting factors also are being used.

Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of hemophilia vary, depending on your level of clotting factors. If your clotting-factor level is mildly reduced, you might bleed only after surgery or trauma. If your deficiency is severe, you can bleed easily for seemingly no reason.
Signs and symptoms of spontaneous bleeding include:
* Unexplained and excessive bleeding from cuts or injuries, or after surgery or dental work
* Many large or deep bruises
* Unusual bleeding after vaccinations
* Pain, swelling or tightness in your joints
* Blood in your urine or stool
* Nosebleeds without a known cause
* In infants, unexplained irritability
Bleeding into the brain
A simple bump on the head can cause bleeding into the brain for some people who have severe hemophilia. This rarely happens, but it's one of the most serious complications that can occur. Signs and symptoms include:
* Painful, prolonged headache
* Repeated vomiting
* Sleepiness or lethargy
* Double vision
* Sudden weakness or clumsiness
* Convulsions or seizures

Causes
When a person bleeds, the body typically pools blood cells together to form a clot to stop the bleeding. Clotting factors are proteins in the blood that work with cells known as platelets to form clots. Hemophilia occurs when a clotting factor is missing or levels of the clotting factor are low.
Congenital hemophilia
Hemophilia is usually inherited, meaning a person is born with the disorder (congenital). Congenital hemophilia is classified by the type of clotting factor that's low.
The most common type is hemophilia A, associated with a low level of factor 8 The next most common type is hemophilia B, associated with a low level of factor 9.
Acquired hemophilia
Some people develop hemophilia with no family history of the disorder. This is called acquired hemophilia.
Acquired hemophilia is a variety of the condition that occurs when a person's immune system attacks clotting factor 8 or 9 in the blood. It can be associated with:
* Pregnancy
* Autoimmune conditions
* Cancer
* Multiple sclerosis
* Drug reactions
Hemophilia inheritance
In the most common types of hemophilia, the faulty gene is located on the X chromosome. Everyone has two s*x chromosomes, one from each parent. Females inherit an X chromosome from the mother and an X chromosome from the father. Males inherit an X chromosome from the mother and a Y chromosome from the father.
This means that hemophilia almost always occurs in boys and is passed from mother to son through one of the mother's genes. Most women with the defective gene are carriers who have no signs or symptoms of hemophilia. But some carriers can have bleeding symptoms if their clotting factors are moderately decreased.
