Your dermatologist may mention the type of alopecia areata you have when discussing treatment. The main types are:
➡️ Alopecia areata: In medical terms, baldness is called alopecia. The word areata means patchy. It can appear anywhere on your body, including your scalp, beard area, eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, inside your nose, or ears.
➡️ Alopecia Totalis: Alopecia Totalis is characterized by a complete loss of hair on the scalp. Some people begin losing their hair as Alopecia Areata patches. A person may experience such rapid hair loss that patches are not visible before most scalp hair is gone.
➡️ Alopecia universalis: Alopecia Universalis causes hair loss on the scalp, face, and rest of the body (including p***c hair). It is common for people with Alopecia Areata to lose somebody's hair, but not all, or some facial hair but not all. But this is rare.
➡️ Diffuse Alopecia Areata (Alopecia Areata Incognita): There is no patchy baldness in Diffuse Alopecia Areata, just sudden thinning all over your scalp. This condition is sometimes known as 'Alopecia Areata Incognita.' It can be difficult to diagnose because it resembles other types of hair loss, such as Telogen Effluvium and Androgenetic Alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss).
➡️ Alopecia Areata Ophiasis: Alopecia Areata Ophiasis causes hair to fall out from the sides of the head and the lower back. Alopecia Areata Ophiasis may be more difficult to treat because it does not respond to medication as quickly. In Alopecia Areata Sisaipho, the hair is lost from the forehead, the front of the scalp, and rarely the eyebrows.
➡️ Alopecia Barbae: In Alopecia Barbae, the beard and mustache are affected by hair loss. Occasionally, Alopecia Barbae affects only the beard, but sometimes it also affects hair loss in other areas, such as the scalp. It usually causes beard hair to fall out in small circular patches. The circles can overlap as more hair falls out. The hair around the edges of the patches sometimes turns white.
