“It’s Basic Biology” – No, You Just Haven’t Evolved Since Middle School
When people say “there are only two genders” or “it’s just basic biology,” they are not making scientific arguments. They’re revealing how far behind they are in their understanding of the world. They’re telling on themselves. Loudly. Publicly. And embarrassingly.
Rebecca Helm summed it up perfectly in this quote:
“When I was in middle school, I learned there were only two genders. When I did my bachelors in Biology, I learned that there are also people who are inters*x and the importance of the SRY gene. When I completed my Masters in Neurosciences, I learned that s*x is already hard to define, and gender is both social and in the brain, making everything a lot more complex. When people say ‘it’s basic biology’ they are telling you they haven’t moved past middle school.”
This is what happens when you grow up and actually learn something. You discover that reality is nuanced. That biology isn’t as simple as two boxes. That people are not one size fits all. The “basic biology” crowd thinks they’re making a mic-drop argument when really they’re quoting Year 7 science and pretending it’s gospel. Biology isn’t basic. It’s messy. Beautiful. Complicated. Full of exceptions and so is gender.
Inters*x people exist. Chromosomal variations exist. Brain structure, hormonal influence, identity development, social context, all exist. We’re not making this up to confuse you. We’re telling you that the real world doesn’t fit your outdated textbook from 1998.
So the next time someone smugly throws out “basic biology,” smile and remind them: middle school was a long time ago. It’s time they caught up.
