Topic: Social Design

Visual design, Product design, Interaction design, human-centred design, Spatial design, Urban design, service design, systemic design,… We attempt to create order in the way the elements of our shared reality are organised and constructed. Many times to improve the environment we share with each other and other living beings. Social design explicitly states this direction. It acknowledges the complexity involved in the creating solutions for social issues experienced. By combining the tools and methods from different forms of design to resolve problems experienced by the public it tries to facilitate a change which is often experienced as challenging by different stakeholders.

Topic: Agriculture
Agriculture and forestry are not only a local story anymore, while you can draw a line on a the ground and call it a border, our food supply and forests are increasingly governed at a European level as specific challenges present itself for agriculture and forestry. Climate change is already affecting our food production and forests and learning from people in other parts of Europe is valuable. Seasonal work migration has an impact on rural communities. Language is often a hurdle in a continent with so many different languages. While digital technology cannot replace the knowledge exchange of direct human interaction, it can help us learn from each other at a larger scale. For the last three years we’ve been involved in developing the EU-FarmBook, a platform to give EU actors in agriculture democratic access to research and innovation funded by the European Commission.

Topic: Forestry

Forests and cities are not always the primary association made. The first is often natural and quiet, the latter is human-made and noisy. Yet, the role of forests, parks and trees in urban areas is crucial! Trees, parks and forests provide a cooling effect in cities, help retain moisture, provide stress relief, operate as a school playground, provide fruit and even become an economic resource. Several organisations, municipalities and regions are putting the crucial role of forestry in urban areas forward! Check out some of these projects and help trees grow in cities!

Topic: Agriculture

The story goes that when you used to ask a city child where milk comes from, there answer would be, “from the cardboard box”. City children would go mad if they saw an actual cow in the meadow. This is changing! Agriculture projects are growing increasingly popular in urban areas. Urban residents want to reconnect to agriculture, slow down and teach their environment about the food they eat. These projects play a crucial role in revaluing agriculture and creating a connection between urban and rural areas.

Farms don’t just focus on food production anymore, they offer stays, sell their goods, provide internships, host events, etc. On your next vacation, consider visiting or staying at a farm, and reconnect to what you eat!

Thanks for joining our screening of Yes, but the parking spots last Tuesday! The subsequent discussion and topics in the news last week showed that the general discussion on this topic is not over. Public engagement remains crucial, and we need to find ways to generate a constructive debate for important discussions such as public space developments!

Some people have reduced mobility and benefit from the possibility to park close to central locations, but is this needed for everybody?

We explored these tensions in the documentary “Yes, but the parking…?!”, where we found responses are generally emotional, are often political or ideological, but it are rarely logical. We concluded with four key tips:
→ Start with fighting for good quality public space, not about parking.
→ Ensure the project works on various scales of action.
→ Work through a co-creative process, there is rarely one answer.
→ Look and a progressive change, not everything needs to happen at once.

Politicians are often faced with this double bind when the redevelopment of public space has to be facilitated.

Welcome 2023!! Let’s keep engaging on designing for change 😉

To start the year with a lot of insights and shared knowledge, we are organizing another version of the online workshop. This time we’ll be looking at the controversial topic of personas and archetypes.

We love when we have to get our hands dirty (literally) 😁

This picture is from the Make Your Own Friche, developed at in the summer of 2021. To celebrate 2 months of weekly gardening with the inhabitants of Cureghem, we invited to prepare amazing crêpes and, while we were planting, we had some live music as well! 😋🎼

Looking foward to more summertime projects next year! ☀️
