⚠️ Difference between LACTOSE and COW MILK PROTEIN ⚠️
Lactose is the sugar of the milk. We synthesize it when we produce the milk, as well as all other mammals. No matter what we eat, breastmilk will always have lactose.
Cow milk protein is indeed a protein. We eat it when we have dairy products and we pass it through our breastmilk. Our body doesn’t produces it, we are just hosts.
When a baby has trouble digesting cow’s milk protein (which is quite common), in order to keep breastfeeding, the mums needs to cut dairy. It can be totally or partially, depending on the baby’s tolerance and symptoms. Otherwise there are special formulas adapted to this cases, if exception is not an option.
Sadly, though, there is still a huge proportion of professionals from the health system that have no training in breastfeeding subjects and just keep spreading lies without bothering to check the scientific research. That’s one of the reasons why successful breastfeeding journey rates are so low in many countries. If the old wives tales come from a white coat the support system around health and motherhood is really fragile.
