‘For public-health campaigners, the continued delays on to***co legislation have been maddening. The evidence is undeniable: raising prices through taxation is the single most effective way to cut smoking rates. It saves more lives, more quickly, than any poster, warning label, or public-awareness campaign.

The EU’s proposed new To***co Taxation Directive, in many ways, is a test of Europe’s moral and political will. Can a continent that prides itself on protecting citizens from harmful products allow a market in addiction to flourish? Or will it finally summon the courage to tax to***co in a way that reflects its true cost to society?'

is wrapping up – but not the ECO's Women & Cancer Workstream.

Together we’re calling attention to the often unaddressed challenges faced by the 12 million women in Europe currently living with cancer, and the 32 million women who care for someone with cancer.

Through the new Women’s Cancer Rights campaign, ECO is calling for:

🔹 Recognition of women’s health as a fundamental right
🔹 Fair and equitable cancer prevention, care and treatment, essential for stronger societies and economies
🔹 Urgent action from the EU and Member States to address the disproportionate burden of care placed on women

💪 There’s so much more we should be doing!

A new milestone for cancer prevention. 🌟

The new European Code Against Cancer (ECAC5) introduces 14 policy recommendations to reduce the risk of cancer. What should member states do?

🫁 Lung cancer screening is now officially recommended. Countries are urged to introduce low-dose CT (LDCT) screening for people at high risk.
🚭 Continue to implement and enforce the WHO Framework Convention on To***co Control through higher taxation, smoke-free legislation, plain packaging, and support for cessation services.
💉 HPV vaccination is now recommended for both girls and boys.
🍔 Introduce fiscal and regulatory measures to encourage healthier eating patterns and limit processed foods high in fat, sugar, and salt.
🍷 Enforce labelling regulations that clearly communicate alcohol-related cancer risks.
☀️ Harmonise and enforce policies to protect people from exposure to UV radiation.

The European Cancer Organisation (ECO) applauds the recent advances in ECAC5.

Cancer is not the same for everyone.
And their care shouldn’t be either.

Women and LGBTIQ individuals often face unique barriers in cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment.

These gaps are often rooted in social, economic, and structural inequalities and can delay diagnoses, worsen outcomes, and increase suffering.

At the , this session highlights the urgent need for inclusive, equitable cancer policies. Experts will share:
📝 Insights from ECO’s work on Women and Cancer
📝 Findings from ECO’s survey on LGBTIQ cancer care
📝 Strategies to remove barriers and amplify marginalised voices

Equity isn’t optional. It’s essential for better outcomes for all.
