Last week, we unveiled the refreshed Southeast Europe Declaration on HPV prevention, renewing commitments on vaccination, cervical cancer screening, data systems, public communication and cross-border cooperation. 🤝

We are proud to welcome additional signatories to the updated Declaration. Their public support strengthens the collective voice for HPV prevention across the region!

This updated edition includes recommendations from the ECO Good Practice Guide on HPV Vaccination and the ‘Closing the Gaps’ report on cervical cancer screening, ✍️ and recognises the current challenge of using existing tools for prevention, effectively and consistently across countries. 👈

We invite you to endorse the Declaration and support stronger regional cooperation on HPV prevention: 🔗 https://www.europeancancer.org/events/420:one-region-one-goal.html -europe-declaration-2026

As cancer care becomes increasingly digital, cybersecurity is no longer just an IT issue, it is an issue that effects the safety of each and every patient. 🔐

From genomic sequencing and AI-assisted diagnostics to radiotherapy systems and cross-border clinical trial data, modern oncology depends on secure and resilient digital infrastructure.

In our response to the latest proposed EU Cybersecurity Act, we are calling for:

🏥 Dedicated cybersecurity support for healthcare providers
💶 EU funding aligned with cybersecurity obligations for hospitals and cancer centres
🌍 Stronger support for lower-capacity member states to improve resilience
👩‍💻 Cybersecurity training designed with input from the health sector

The human papillomavirus ( ) causes cervical cancer and at least six other cancers. The HPV vaccine can prevent them all. 🛡️

But lack of adequate vaccination programmes and implementation gaps among diverse populations continue to leave too many people at risk.

This , we are calling for:
📘 Stronger implementation of evidence-based HPV vaccination policies
💉 Equitable access to vaccination for both girls and boys
🤝 Greater political commitment to prevention across Europe

Our latest Good Practice Guide on HPV Vaccination provides practical recommendations, helping countries across the continent to improve uptake

Today, we met with European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva to discuss the future of EU cancer research.

The meeting focused on how the next phase of EU research policy can better support cancer care and control, and reinforce Europe’s position as a global leader in health science.

The key points raised by ECO President Isabel Rubio included:
🔬 The value of the EU Mission on Cancer and the need to build on its achievements beyond 2027
🤝 The importance of stronger coordination of cancer research across Europe, including through cross-border collaboration and national cancer mission hubs
📊 The increasing incidence of cancer, including in younger population, and the burden this brings to healthcare systems and the economy
💡 The importance of investment in cancer research and innovation for Europe’s competitiveness

We thank Commissioner Zaharieva for sharing her time and perspective, and we look forward to future in-depth discussions.

Cancer care does not end when the treatment does.

On European Cancer Nursing Day 2026 (ECND26), we recognise those dedicated professionals who continue to walk alongside people long after the diagnosis and active treatment.

From survivorship care to long-term follow-up, from managing late effects to supporting emotional wellbeing, cancer nurses provide support that lasts a lifetime.

On 18 May, let’s join the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) to celebrate and advocate for cancer nurses in all care settings.

🇱🇹 Every year, more than 16,000 Lithuanians are diagnosed with cancer, and at least 8,000 die from it. In addition, cancer costs the Lithuanian economy €426 million annually.

At a time when geopolitical tensions are straining European economies, Lithuania cannot afford to let cancer deepen this challenge.

Last week in Lithuania, the ECO team met the
➡️ Vice-Minister for Health, Daniel Naumovas
➡️ MPs from the Health Committee inside the Lithuanian Seimas

In addition, we held a series of meetings with local stakeholders. The recurring message: health is not a cost; it is an investment in the country’s preparedness, innovation, and competitiveness.
