"Return on investment of rapid ICU workforce upskilling: an economic and cost effectiveness analysis"
by Claudia Ebm et al.
➡️ This is the first study to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of emergency healthcare training during a crisis.
Funded by the European Commission, the C19_SPACE programme — developed by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) — upskilled over 17,000 non-ICU doctors and nurses across 24 countries between the first and second COVID-19 waves.
💡 Using immersive 3D virtual reality and local hands-on training, the programme:
• Expanded ICU capacity by an estimated 2,500 beds
• Delivered an impressive 478% return on investment
• Recovered training costs in just 5 days
With a €2.4M investment, C19_SPACE now stands as a blueprint for future crisis preparedness, showcasing innovation, scalability, and tangible health-economic impact.
