A month ago we were at Paris Fashion Week celebrating Amandine Leost’s graduation show at where a few of our frames, reworked in collaboration with the designer, got to walk to runaway.

Her graduation collection is carried by the spirit of the 60’s and 80’s, based in the world of second-hand flea market, where vintage patterns, brights colours and offbeat shapes meet each piece in a perfectly kitsch harmony.

reached out to us with a vision for oversized glasses, reflecting on the rest of her collection, enhancing unexpected silhouettes with both humour and freedom. We dug into our stock and pulled out a few standout frames from Thierry (Morbier, FR, 1970s) that felt just right.

After some back-and-forth on design and specs, together with Amandine we carefully reworked them, dissecting the originals and transforming them into nylon-mount-style frames, ready to hold some truly gigantic 70mm lenses.

Congrats to Amandine, onto more big dreams and even bigger lenses!

Some people collect with purpose. Others collect by instinct - quietly, intuitively, without ever asking themselves why. From stacks of old magazines to digital folders full of screenshots, Nick (Leuven, 1996) is a photographer that collects with open eyes, saving images without knowing exactly what for. “I was just taking pictures […] No concept, no project. Just... a gut feeling.” Somewhere along the way, that gut feeling became the point. “I realised the not-knowing was the work. The indecision, the hesitation, the search.”

That same instinct may have guided his first visit to Bidules. He’d put off buying new glasses for years - tired of the endless search, wary of never quite finding the right frame. He’d always defaulted to “invisible frames.” But this time, he let go of expectations and trusted the process. And then, the right frame found him, gold-filled originating from c.a 1970, made in Morez (Haut-Jura, FR). “For the first time, I saw myself in the mirror and actually liked what I saw.” The glasses speak for themselves- elegant, minimal, silver. They felt like a natural extension of his visual archive. Not loud, not hidden. Just right.

On days off in Brussels, Nick meets with his friends in the park, grabs a beer or pastis at Petit Lion - one of his favorite spots in the city, a true crossroads of people in the city. “There’s always good vibes, fun people, new stories, and very cute dogs.” Ending the day with a visit at le Pré Salé for steak and fries.

A handful of RISTA ‘coque’ frames from ca. 1980 by Thierry (Morbier, FR).

These are solid pieces - characteristic of the era’s boldness but with a refinement that sets them apart. The ‘coque’ refers to their wrap construction: thick acetate fronts that carry in with deep curves and strong lines through the temples.

Thierry’s story goes back three generations, when the workshop was still established in the family’s farm. As the story goes, the grandfather once asked, “Why polish frames for the big Morezian factories when we can make our own?” Fast forward, and Thierry has become one of France’s leading manufacturers - both in volume and quality, helping shape the success of major names like Lafont, Théo, and many more.

Sturdy, sharp, and full of character - these RISTAs carry themselves well through time.

A few boxes, labels, inscriptions, and packaging remnants from our latest digging trip in Haut-Jura and Ain (FR).

They don’t spill their stories right away, but there are hints about where they’ve been, who packed them up, and when. Any guesses from our typographic experts or history enthusiasts on the era these might be from?

Come chat with us about lettering, boxes and glasses — we’re around Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 to 18:30.

A few pictures from our late-may digging trip.

A quick but productive couple of days through Ain and Haut-Jura in France - straight to the point, just how we like it. We had some great conversations, restocked on Bugatti (1990s - 2000s) for the techy-sporty lovers, and picked up a few mid-century parts and faces to keep crafting our beloved FRONTS.

Also in the haul: a sweet series of Rénor acetate (Oyonnax, 1970-1980s), a good stock of sunglasses and optics in all shapes and shades, and mountains of boxes we didn’t even have time to open - for next time.

Fresh frames every day. You know the drill. Swing by, say hi.

F***y (1987, Fribourg) had just broken her glasses - spit in half after ten years. A heartbreak. She wears them mostly to work, so not having them felt like being slightly out of orbit.

She came to Bidules right after coffee with her editor, where they’d been talking about her next book. She was nervous, a decade since her last eye test, unsure about finding a frame that would fit her like the previous ones, bracing for worsening myopia. But after just a few minutes in the store her new frames caught her eye immediately, a UK-made 14 rolled-gold from ALPIRA, made in the 1950s and bought from the stock of an old optician in Ciney (BE) - “ the finesse, small details, the purity of the form… like something a child in the 50s would’ve worn. I liked that.”

is an illustrator and has been drawing since forever. Recently, she created a series of frescoes for the pediatric wing of Les Viviers, Charleroi’s new hospital - a space full of color and care. Her book “Collections”, imagined with Victoire de Changy, is an ode to that instinct to gather, preserve, and wonder, delicately illustrated with the same touch.

When she’s not illustrating, she’s having coffee at Aa, strolling in Parc Tenbosch or browsing at . She likes spending afternoons at ABC house (Art Basics for Children) or at the , and then finish the day with dinner at .bx

Her glasses aren’t always on her face - but they’re always close by. Like her mechanical pencil, like her collection of wooden horses, like any good object.

The new FRONTs frame mod.15 is straight out of the workshop!

This front is actually one of the parts that inspired the project ages ago. After we found it in Morez (FR), it was laying in our workshop for years until we finally matched it to temples also coming from a ‘spare-parts’ frame we had with a damaged tenon. We say ‘we’ but it’s all thanks to Mathias’s work. Funnily enough, all of these parts seem to be originated from the same manufacturer Bourgeois (Morbier, FR). All that thanks to the antique, three-rivet, deadstock hinges by S.A Jeunet (Morez, FR). Somehow feels like it was meant to be.

Our basement collection is filled with parts, that were, once upon a time, too hard to restore but who are now simply waiting for their own strange and unusual match to be completed.

Head to the blog for a longer read about FRONTS, or come by the store to try them on. Maybe you’ll arrive at the perfect time for another unique FRONT frame to magically appear from our basement.

Josie (Fourmies, 2000) has an eye for the small and precious - a collector of rocks (especially the ones with holes in them), sea-polished glass, and the scribbles, annotations, and forgotten notes tucked inside vintage Michelin guides or Manufrance magazines.

It took her over an hour and more than thirty frames to find the right one, a process not unlike walking the shore searching for the perfect rock. She chose her new FOCA (Domegge Di Cadore, c.a 1970) for its geometry, space, and a certain subtlety. Fitting, indeed.

She only began wearing glasses regularly in art school, before that, they never felt necessary. That shift in focus seems to have paid off: Josie was recently selected by the Young Curators Programme to accompany Petticoat Government, part of the Belgian Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale.

When she’s not working, you might find her digging for more precious and forgotten printed matter at .bruxelles , browsing .books , and taking her time over lunch at , ideally with a new read in hand.

Notre histoire

At Bidules, we bring back to life unique glasses from the past, glasses from yesterday or from decades ago. Actually, age does not matter. We offer solid, nicely designed spectacles that really stand out.

We track down old stocks and pairs of iconic makes and models. We travel the world following the traces of legendary frame designers and manufacturers. We obsessively search through cellars and attics, and we secretly enter closed-down factories to find quality glasses worth preserving for future generations.

We check, repair, adapt, transform and refresh the pairs we find in order to bring you perfect new olds.
