Marius (1994, Saint-Martin-d’Hères) is a Brussels based multidisciplinary artist. He gets his hands dirty working with a broad range of different materials and topics - all left with an unmistakable mark of his style, bringing their meaning to a new light. As he says himself, he likes “to give value to what does not seem to have any and to make the useless indispensable.” Definitely leaving our heads full with second thoughts.

It took a few visits to Bidules for him to find the right pair of glasses. At first, he picked “too many different things” and couldn’t decide, but when he came back a few days later the choice was obvious: a Francoflex by Selecta from the 1970s, sturdy and reliable, the perfect companion in the workshop.

The work he is currently the most proud of is a sculpture created with , built from branches from a fallen oak tree and wool felt dyed with the tree’s bark. Blending with its natural setting, the piece reflects a deep care for materials and colour. You’d look twice, maybe three times, if you stumbled across it in the Marcaulieu forest in France.

It comes as no surprise that he’s always collected sticks, stones and sand from everywhere. More recently, wood and wool have joined the list alongside all the other carefully selected materials.

On his days off, he prefers not to plan, letting moments and places reveal themselves. Many of his favorite spots, he says, are simply the ones that found him at the right time. Needless to say, an inspiring approach to many things in life.

BOOK LAUNCH! SAVE THE DATE!

The shop is turning seven this year, and we’re celebrating with a brand new book!

Under the art direction of , the team put together a visual anthology of the forgotten corners of the eyewear industry - started in 2018, the collection is an never-ending project that blends scanography and photography to explore fragments of an industry shaped by time, chance, and memory. Frozen in time for now, it’s come together into an extensive 380 pages black and white publication. This is the first edition of 300 copies and we can’t wait to share it and celebrate it with you!

We’ll be enjoying an evening of music and performance by OddJob, alongside talks curated by on the topic of collecting - honouring both the endless collecting that happens at Bidules and the many forms of collecting happening around us.

The launch event runs from 7:00pm to 10:00pm on Thursday, September 25th at Bidules. We’d love for you to join us - drinks are on the house! See you there!

Viennaline 326 made in Austria in the 1970s by and with Optyl.

Optyl, a molded epoxy resin, was a revolutionary material that opened new design opportunities in the eyewear industry in early 1970’s. As Fashion went bigger and bigger, acetate the tradional material, was sometimes too heavy. Light, but also cost-efficient -specially for large quantities- Optyl was the perfect follow-up material for the “dream big” frames of “dream bigger” decade. It’s still used today in some modern models to achieve thick yet lightweight frames with special translucent colours that acetate can’t offer - it also retains it’s original shape anytime it’s heated up! Optyl is fun.

Come and test Optyl yourself in the shop, we’re open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 to 18:30.

Olave (1984, Brussels) spends her time with her head buried in writings, stories and essays, whether it’s the ones she’s loved to read or loved to write, with a goal of having her own novel published someday.

In the everyday she wears a 1960s Tournoi 32 frame by Essel: a beautiful mixed-material piece in gold with an acetate brow that keeps the look light and balanced. In this portrait, under a Belgium grey sky, she wears a pair of 356 Bugatti matte-gold sunglasses (with custom shaped lenses) from Haut-Jura, France, pre-2005. It’s the latest addition to her growing collection of frames, though it all began with a titanium pair that, well… lasted one day. (We’ve all been there.)

We hope this frame proves more durable, and are at least half as strong as the words that she lives by: ‘There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people’

Meet Sophie (1995, Wilrijk) and Quinn (1995, Leuven), an unmatched pair at Bidules. You might be getting a feeling of deja-vu looking at one of these people, and you’re right to trust it. Quinn (on the right) is hard to miss at Bidules. They’re our store manager and one of our two optometrists. Always around to give you the best advice when it comes to picking, adjusting, or fixing your frames.

But there’s more! Outside of Bidules, Quinn is also a skateboarder, boardgames enthusiast, professional diy-er and avid collector of outstanding colourful objects, a passion shared with Sophie. Sophie, the other half of the pair, is a TV director with a soft spot DVDs, vintage toys and anything to spark a playful and young mind. With her camera and an ear for great stories, she brings everyday characters to life.

Sophie might’ve benefited from Quinn’s expertise when it came to picking her glasses (although we haven’t confirmed this). She’s wearing Peter by Milappe and Quinn is wearing a Montana. Both solid 70s frames, bold and square -perhaps to balance out the rest of their fun and colourful lives. A truly complimentary pair, speaking both in terms of glasses and people.

On a day off in Brussels you can find them eating pancakes at Chigaco Cafe, browsing around at a flea market, skating at Morichar or Usrulines, enjoying a pizza at Da Momo or maybe having drink at Cafe de la Pompe where they first met.

The Lizon 100 arrived just a few weeks ago and have already become a favorite!

Originally designed in the ‘70s by Lizon in Morez, France, these frames were produced under Lizon et Cie, MMLO (Manufacture Mécanique de Lunettes et d’Optique, aka Méli-Mélo), a collaborative factory uniting several local makers. A standout chapter in the eyewear history!

Available now in bottle brown and black, both as sunnies and opticals.

Swing by and try them on before we close for a short break between August 11-18!

A month ago we were at Paris Fashion Week celebrating Amandine Leost’s graduation show at where a few of our frames, reworked in collaboration with the designer, got to walk to runaway.

Her graduation collection is carried by the spirit of the 60’s and 80’s, based in the world of second-hand flea market, where vintage patterns, brights colours and offbeat shapes meet each piece in a perfectly kitsch harmony.

reached out to us with a vision for oversized glasses, reflecting on the rest of her collection, enhancing unexpected silhouettes with both humour and freedom. We dug into our stock and pulled out a few standout frames from Thierry (Morbier, FR, 1970s) that felt just right.

After some back-and-forth on design and specs, together with Amandine we carefully reworked them, dissecting the originals and transforming them into nylon-mount-style frames, ready to hold some truly gigantic 70mm lenses.

Congrats to Amandine, onto more big dreams and even bigger lenses!

Some people collect with purpose. Others collect by instinct - quietly, intuitively, without ever asking themselves why. From stacks of old magazines to digital folders full of screenshots, Nick (Leuven, 1996) is a photographer that collects with open eyes, saving images without knowing exactly what for. “I was just taking pictures […] No concept, no project. Just... a gut feeling.” Somewhere along the way, that gut feeling became the point. “I realised the not-knowing was the work. The indecision, the hesitation, the search.”

That same instinct may have guided his first visit to Bidules. He’d put off buying new glasses for years - tired of the endless search, wary of never quite finding the right frame. He’d always defaulted to “invisible frames.” But this time, he let go of expectations and trusted the process. And then, the right frame found him, gold-filled originating from c.a 1970, made in Morez (Haut-Jura, FR). “For the first time, I saw myself in the mirror and actually liked what I saw.” The glasses speak for themselves- elegant, minimal, silver. They felt like a natural extension of his visual archive. Not loud, not hidden. Just right.

On days off in Brussels, Nick meets with his friends in the park, grabs a beer or pastis at Petit Lion - one of his favorite spots in the city, a true crossroads of people in the city. “There’s always good vibes, fun people, new stories, and very cute dogs.” Ending the day with a visit at le Pré Salé for steak and fries.

A handful of RISTA ‘coque’ frames from ca. 1980 by Thierry (Morbier, FR).

These are solid pieces - characteristic of the era’s boldness but with a refinement that sets them apart. The ‘coque’ refers to their wrap construction: thick acetate fronts that carry in with deep curves and strong lines through the temples.

Thierry’s story goes back three generations, when the workshop was still established in the family’s farm. As the story goes, the grandfather once asked, “Why polish frames for the big Morezian factories when we can make our own?” Fast forward, and Thierry has become one of France’s leading manufacturers - both in volume and quality, helping shape the success of major names like Lafont, Théo, and many more.

Sturdy, sharp, and full of character - these RISTAs carry themselves well through time.

A few boxes, labels, inscriptions, and packaging remnants from our latest digging trip in Haut-Jura and Ain (FR).

They don’t spill their stories right away, but there are hints about where they’ve been, who packed them up, and when. Any guesses from our typographic experts or history enthusiasts on the era these might be from?

Come chat with us about lettering, boxes and glasses — we’re around Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 to 18:30.

Notre histoire

At Bidules, we bring back to life unique glasses from the past, glasses from yesterday or from decades ago. Actually, age does not matter. We offer solid, nicely designed spectacles that really stand out.

We track down old stocks and pairs of iconic makes and models. We travel the world following the traces of legendary frame designers and manufacturers. We obsessively search through cellars and attics, and we secretly enter closed-down factories to find quality glasses worth preserving for future generations.

We check, repair, adapt, transform and refresh the pairs we find in order to bring you perfect new olds.
