A powerful example is ISN Fellow Dr. Khaled Batis from Yemen. Together with his team at Al-Mukalla Kidney Center and Al-Borj Consultant Hospital, he helped establish the first kidney biopsy service in eastern Yemen.
As Dr. Batis highlights, this achievement reflects how the ISN Fellowship Program translates advanced training into sustainable clinical services, even in resource-limited settings.

What’s holding us back from uncovering the causes of CKDu?

Chronic kidney disease of undetermined etiology (CKDu) continues to drive high mortality and place a heavy burden on communities, health systems, and economies worldwide. Yet even after two decades of research, its causes remain unclear.

A new ISN i3C meeting report in Kidney International®—developed at WCN'25—takes a closer look at why. It highlights critical challenges shaping the field:
🔹 Inconsistent terminology and limited understanding of regional burden
🔹 Difficulty distinguishing disease onset from progression
🔹 The need for more robust, objective exposure assessment beyond self-report

Importantly, the report also outlines practical recommendations to strengthen research approaches and accelerate progress toward identifying the causes of CKDu. ()
