In aviation, your career can span decades, yet not every airline offers a lifetime journey. Some airlines are merely seen as “stepping stones” - places where young pilots quickly build flight hours to then move on to better opportunities.

Comments from pilots submitted for our Social Rating show that Ryanair, Wizz Air, DHL, easyJet and Malta Air are such examples.

Aviation careers deserve stability. Choose wisely and shape your lifelong flight path.

If the technology exists, why are we still reacting instead of anticipating?
Live turbulence data, continuous weather updates.. The tools are already there.

So why isn’t it standard yet?

Low-cost carriers sometimes face criticism for their no-frills approach, even towards their pilots and cabin crew. However, our Social Rating (2024) showed that budget-friendly doesn’t always mean poor working conditions. Here are some standout examples:

Transavia: Achieved the highest score among low-cost airlines (90%), proving that being low-cost and a responsible employer are not mutually exclusive.

Vueling: Despite challenges in certain areas, Vueling maintains a high satisfaction score of 82%.

easyJet: Scored 78%, with pilots acknowledging it as a good long-term career option, though there are calls for improvements in pay and rostering.

Are you a pilot at one of these airlines? Do these scores reflect your experience? Share your thoughts with us!

European rules exist, but without cross-border enforcement, they’re just words.

ECA and ETF submitted the case to ELA - covering declaration of work issues, bogus self-employment, posting issues

This resulted in at least two joint inspections.
Change is possible through joint forces.

When airlines operate across borders but rules stay national, things don’t line up.

That gap hits pilots directly, from pay to working conditions.

Stronger coordination between pilot groups isn’t optional. It’s how you keep standards from slipping.

ECA has pulled together tools and insights to help pilots deal with this reality.

“EASA never does anything for pilots.”

You said it and EASA listened.

At the end of 2025, pilots took part in the EASA’s survey on Socio-economic Influences on Safety and now, the results are in and being turned into concrete recommendations.

Philip Brooke from EASA joined the ECA Industrial Working Group today to share the first insights. Let’s get into them!

The full report will be published at the end of April.

From the very first powered flights of the Wright brothers to today’s highly automated and interconnected aircraft, weather has remained one of the most decisive factors influencing flight safety and operational efficiency.

Strong winds, snow, and ice disrupt ground operations.
Low visibility makes take-off and landing more demanding.
Turbulence and icing impact both comfort and performance.

And large-scale events like convective systems, volcanic ash clouds, and tropical storms can completely reshape flight routes.

This isn’t occasional. It’s constant.

Europe has fatigue rules, but are they really enforced?

A decade after EASA’s FTL rules, the risk hasn’t disappeared.

Without clear oversight and proper enforcement, it remains very real in Europe’s cockpits.

It’s time to strengthen both rules and enforcement.

Commercial aviation is increasingly sharing the sky with conflict.

Missiles, military drones and GPS interference are becoming part of the operational environment pilots must navigate in several regions of the world.

As our President Tanja Harter told Reuters:
“We are not military pilots. We are not trained to deal with these kinds of threats in the air.”

Pilots are trained to manage complex systems and challenging situations.
However, this does not mean they should be expected to operate in environments shaped by military conflict.

Protecting civil aviation must remain a priority.

Ten years after EASA’s FTL rules came into force, fatigue risks have not disappeared.

Through the Social Rating 2024, European pilots spoke clearly about where the system still falls short.

Strong rules mean little without real fatigue management and credible oversight.

Minimum legal limits were designed as safeguards, not operational targets.
The gaps are known. The evidence is there. The question is whether regulators and operators are willing to act.
