🌱 Horses need sugar — but in balance
“Sugar isn’t the problem, as long as the balance is right.”

Sugars and fructans are an essential source of energy for your horse.
But when that balance is disrupted, an excess can disturb metabolism and insulin regulation — increasing the risk of laminitis.

Understanding sugar is the first step. Supporting the body makes the real difference.

🔬 From knowledge to results
After our article on fructans and sugar and the introduction of LaminAid, one key question remains: does it really work?

👉 Field tests in horses with laminitis showed clear improvements, with up to 70% fewer signs of lameness after 30 days (in combination with PodoSens).

🔍 Scientific research also confirms the effect:
✔️ Improved insulin sensitivity
✔️ Positive effect on the response to sugars
✔️ Support of metabolic processes

💡 LaminAid doesn’t just target symptoms, it also supports the underlying cause.

🌱 Fructans, sugar… and sensitive hooves
In our previous article, we explained how sugars and fructans can contribute to metabolic imbalances – and why this may increase the risk of laminitis.

But what if your horse is sensitive to this?
👉 Then it’s important not only to adjust the ration, but also to provide additional support to the body.

Cavalor LaminAid works on multiple levels to support horses with sensitive hooves:
✔️ Supports a healthy gut flora
✔️ Helps restore hormonal and metabolic balance
✔️ Promotes blood circulation, including in the hoof

This way, you address the issue not only externally, but from within as well.
💡 Tip: combine with Cavalor PodoSens for optimal hoof support.

Now that you know fructan accumulates in spring grass — what can you do about it? 🌿
Choose the right moment: is the night temperature above 4-5°C? Then morning grazing is the safest option. When nights are colder, it's better to limit pasture access. Build up grazing time gradually and give your horse some roughage beforehand, so it doesn't head out on an empty stomach. ☀️🌙

Extra caution for horses with obesity, insulin resistance or a history of laminitis. 🐴

The first days out in the pasture are a real treat for many horses — and they deserve it! But be aware: fructan levels in grass can be surprisingly high in early spring.

On sunny days, grasses produce plenty of sugars. During warm nights, these are used for growth — but when nights are cold (< 4-5°C), they accumulate instead. That's exactly the situation you often see in early spring. ☀️🌙

For sugar-sensitive horses, high fructan levels can lead to digestive issues, colic or laminitis. Mindful grazing management is therefore essential during this period. 🐴

Is your foal due to be born soon? 🐴✨
Then a good start is essential. Did you know that a foal is born without immunity? It must quickly build up protection against bacteria and viruses.

👉 This happens through colostrum, which must be absorbed by the small intestine within the first 24 hours after birth.

The condition of the mare also plays an important role. Is your mare overweight? Choose a feed that:
✔ is rich in high-quality proteins
✔ provides sufficient vitamins and minerals
✔ is low in energy

This way, you give both mare and foal the best possible start 💛

🌱 From stable to pasture: how to do it right
Is your horse going back to pasture after winter? Be careful: young spring grass is high in sugars and low in fibre. Especially for sensitive horses, this can lead to colic or loose droppings.

✔️ Reintroduce grazing gradually (start with 1 hour)
✔️ Wait until the grass is 15–20 cm long
✔️ Never turn your horse out on an empty stomach
✔️ Provide enough hay to support a stable gut flora

⏰ Tip: preferably let sensitive horses graze in the morning (if it hasn’t frozen overnight)

👉 Extra support? Cavalor VitaFlora helps the gut adapt. Emergency 911 is ideal to keep on hand in case of digestive issues.
A smooth transition really makes a difference 💚

🐴 Foundational vs Functional nutrition

Good nutrition always starts with the basics. Foundational nutrition includes the essential nutrients every horse needs daily to stay healthy: energy, protein, vitamins and minerals, water, and above all sufficient fibre from roughage. Without this foundation, the body cannot function optimally.

Only when this base is in place does functional nutrition come into play. These are ingredients that can provide additional targeted support, such as pre- and probiotics, antioxidants, herbal extracts or essential oils. They can contribute to comfort, performance or recovery, but they never replace a well-balanced ration.

👉 First the foundation, then the fine-tuning. Read all about it here: https://loom.ly/ZkyMEsQ

In this blog, we explain how the feeding pyramid for horses, the feed as you need principle, the difference between foundational and functional nutrition, and especially the importance of fibre come together to form your horse’s daily scoop of happiness.
