Molecular Medicine is a research facility shared by ADVANTAGE (Prof. Z. Debyser, R. Gijsbers and W. Baekelandt) and the BREATHE Lab (Prof. M. Carlon)

Peelaerts), the Laboratory for Neurobiology and Gene therapy (Prof V. Molecular Medicine is composed of the Laboratory for Molecular Virology and Gene Therapy and the Laboratory for Neurobiology and Gene therapy headed respectively by Prof. Zeger Debyser and Prof. Veerle Baekelandt. In 2005, the Division of Molecular Medicine was created in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Medicine. In 201

2 the unit became an interdisciplinary center housing the two research laboratories. The Laboratory of Molecular Virology and Gene Therapy belongs to the Department for Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences and the Laboratory for Neurobiology and Gene Therapy to the Department of Neurosciences.

🚨 We’re hiring a Postdoctoral Fellow in Leukemia Research!
Join Professor Zeger Debyser’s group at KU Leuven, part of the ADVANTAGE Division, to work on innovative leukemia therapies within the European ArTCell project.
You will develop and evaluate artificial CAR-T cells in cell and animal models at MolMed, which offers state-of-the-art facilities for molecular medicine in an interdisciplinary and translational environment.

PhD in biomedical or related sciences, experience in oncology and animal models, and a strong research record.

🧬PhD Opportunity – HIV Cure (Block & Lock Strategy)

KU Leuven is hiring a PhD candidate to join Prof. Zeger Debyser’s lab at the Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences. The project focuses on developing a “block and lock” cure strategy for HIV infection, aiming to achieve a functional cure by silencing the virus permanently.

Congratulations to our MolMed alumnus Mattijs Bulcaen.

Biochemicus Mattijs Bulcaen van KU Leuven heeft de Eos Pipet 2025 én de Publieksprijs gewonnen! Deze prijs bekroont de meest beloftevolle jonge wetenschapper van Vlaanderen. Mattijs slaagde erin DNA-fouten te corrigeren in cellen van mucoviscidosepatiënten. Hij zoekt nu een manier om de therapie veilig in de longen van patiënten te brengen en hen te verlossen van hun aandoening.

KU Leuven biochemist Mattijs Bulcaen has won the Eos Pipet 2025 and the Audience Award! This award recognizes the most promising young scientist in Flanders. Mattijs succeeded in correcting DNA errors in cells from cystic fibrosis patients. He is now searching for a way to safely deliver the therapy to patients' lungs and cure them of their condition.
