Shotgun metagenomics is another way of analysing the microbiome composition than 16S rRNA gene sequencing. By using metagenomic information we cannot only identify WHO is there, but also have a deeper look into the function of the microbiome. This is possible because of the detection of virulence, antimicrobial resistance or metabolic gene markers.
