Constantly searching in low/zero visibility smoke in residential structures is not reasonable. Smoke increases risk for everyone operating on scene. It increases the chance of becoming disoriented, slows the search, raises the probability of missing a victim, reduces the ability to see or hear victims, blocks exterior light, makes it harder to see or hear other firefighters, and garbles verbal communication. All working against the Mission.

Ironically, poor visibility will often stop officers from allowing firefighters to search their own rooms. The smoke drives that decision. It’s emotional, not reasonable. Visibility drops, comfort drops, and the default reaction becomes hesitation instead of control.

So control it.

When the fire is knocked down—or when we can isolate the space—we should be venting the room. Clearing the smoke reduces risk, lowers stress, and improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the search. It improves victim outcomes, shortens search time, and shortens the time to rescue.

There’s no reason to search blind if we have the ability to change the conditions.
