The NHV group, based in Ostend Belgium, is specialized in B-to-B helicopter services and has a strong geographic presence in Europe and Western Africa. The group conducts operations out of several bases on the two continents with a team of over 550 employees. The group has a leading position in Europe as the only helicopter operator that conducts operations in every oil producing country in the re

gion. The scope of work also includes: Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS), Maritime Services, which include Search and Rescue (SAR), offshore Wind Farms and Harbor Pilot Services. Vertech Offshore and Airlift are two specialized companies within the NHV group who are leaders in their niche of flare tip replacement and power grid construction and maintenance. Aside from the helicopter operations, NHV is an approved training organization (ATO) and an official service center for our partner Airbus Helicopters. The group has a multipurpose high value fleet of 65 helicopters. Since 2012, NHV has ordered 16 helicopters of the state-of-the-art Airbus Helicopters H175 model and is the global launching customer to fly the H175. NHV’s majority shareholder is Ardian, the independent private investment company with assets of US$60bn managed or advised in Europe, North America and Asia.

At NHV, we operate a fully certified EASA Part‑145 rotary‑wing Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) centre (UK.145.01435 / BE.145.23), offering comprehensive nose‑to‑tail support for helicopters such as Airbus H145 (including D2 → D3 conversions), AS365 N2/N3, H155, H175, AW139 and AW169!

The day began with poor weather conditions, but by midday, the skies cleared—allowing us to operate safely and capture this striking image of the aircraft reflected in a puddle on the ground.

🎉 Celebrating 25 Years with NHV - Congratulations, Astrid!
On July 1st, 2000, Astrid Van der Elst joined NHV. Fun fact: her first contract accidentally listed her as a pilot, a sign of the times in our pilot-heavy early days (or has she been hiding something? 😉).
From reception and admin support to becoming the trusted right hand of our founder, Astrid helped shape our Finance and HR departments from the ground up.
Over the years, she has worn many hats - from Back Office Manager to her current role as Fleet Coordinator - always bringing unmatched precision, dedication, and loyalty.
The picture below was taken on Astrid's wedding day in 2005! The OO-NHV dropped her and her husband off at Bredene City Hall for their ceremony. Afterwards, the aircraft continued on to the Formula 1 race at Francorchamps for VIP flights!

NHV has been using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for Vestas operations in Esbjerg since NHV launched the use of H175 aircraft for the offshore wind industry in April.

We thought we would catch up with the Base Manager and Technical Director to see how it is going:

Q. What logistical challenges did we face when integrating SAF into operations at our Denmark base, and how were they overcome?

A. There have been no significant challenges. The only issue encountered is that our fuel truck is not equipped for pressure fueling, which results in slightly longer refueling times for the helicopter. However, procedures are in place to ensure this does not lead to any delays.

Q. What blend ratio of SAF to conventional jet fuel are we currently using in Denmark, and is there a plan to increase it over time?

A. Today, we operate with 40% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). However, if there is an opportunity to increase this beyond 40% and our customers request it, we are more than willing to do so.

Q. Are there any specific maintenance or performance considerations when operating helicopters with SAF compared to conventional fuel?

A. No, there are no additional requirements. The fuel must be checked before every flight, and the same regulations apply regardless of whether it is SAF or Jet A-1.
