Melanomen zijn tumoren die ontstaan uit pigmentcellen. Ze komen vooral voor bij schimmels, maar kunnen zich ook bij andere paarden ontwikkelen.

🔍 𝙃𝙤𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙟𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣?
Je ziet ze vaak als donkere bultjes/knobbels. Ze zijn typisch rond tot ovaal met een glad oppervlak. De meest frequente plaatsen zijn bij de staart (onder de staartwortel), rond de a**s, op de geslachtsdelen, onder de manenkam en aan het hoofd (oren, kaak,..).

🧠 𝘽𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙟𝙠 𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙚 𝙬𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙣:
● Meestal langzaam groeiend
● Vaak lange tijd goedaardig, zonder klachten
● ‼️ Ze kunnen vanaf een bepaalde grootte of, afhankelijk van de plek, problemen veroorzaken (bv. bij mesten, plassen of bewegen)
● ‼️ Melanomen kunnen ook inwendig (in bv. buik of lymfeklieren) voorkomen en zijn niet zichtbaar, deze kunnen ook voor complicaties zorgen

Melanomas are tumors that arise from pigment cells. They occur mainly in grey horses, but can also develop in other horses of different colour.

🔍 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙯𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙨?
They are often seen as dark bumps or nodules. They are typically round to oval with a smooth surface. The most common locations are under the tail (beneath the tail base), around the a**s, on the ge****ls, under the mane crest, and on the head (ears, jaw, etc.).

🧠 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬:
● Usually slow-growing
● Often benign for a long time without causing symptoms
● ‼️ Once they reach a certain size, or depending on their location, they can cause problems (e.g. with defecation, urination, or movement)
● ‼️ Melanomas can also occur internally (e.g. in the abdomen or lymph nodes) and are not visible; these can also lead to complications

Laminitis of hoefbevangenheid is een pijnlijke ontsteking van de lamellen in de hoef. Deze lamellen zorgen voor de verbinding tussen het hoefbeen en de hoefwand. ‼️️Aangezien de ontstoken lamellen loslaten, kan het hoefbeen kantelen of zakken. Snel ingrijpen is dus de boodschap!

🔍 Hoe herken je laminitis?
● Kreupelheid of stijf lopen
● Moeite met draaien
● Warme hoeven
● Een duidelijke pulsatie van de slagader van het onderbeen
● Typische houding: achterover leunen om de voorbenen te ontlasten
● Veel liggen of juist niet willen bewegen

🧠 Belangrijk om te weten:
● Het kan acuut of eerder geleidelijk ontstaan
● Vaak speelt voeding (te rijk gras/voer) een rol
● Overgewicht en hormonale aandoeningen (zoals PPID of insulineresistentie) verhogen het risico

🩺 Wat kan de dierenarts doen?
De behandeling is afhankelijk van de ernst en oorzaak:
● Pijnstilling, ontstekingsremming of andere medicatie
● Aanpassen van voeding
● Rust en zachte ondergrond
● Samenwerking met hoefsmid voor aangepaste hoefverzorging
● Onderzoek naar onderliggende oorzaken

Voorkomen is beter dan genezen: houd het gewicht in de gaten ⚖️ En wees niet enkel voorzichtig met vers voorjaarsgras... 🌱 Ook koude, zonnige dagen zorgen voor hoge suikergehaltes in het gras! ❄️

🩺 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗿𝗲𝘂𝗸 𝗯𝗶𝗷 𝘃𝗲𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 🐴

Een navelbreuk ontstaat wanneer de buikwand rond de navel niet volledig sluit. Hierdoor kan een deel buikinhoud (meestal vet of darm) uitstulpen door de opening in de buikwand. Dit komt vaak voor bij jonge veulens, maar kan in zeldzame gevallen ook bij oudere paarden optreden.

🔍 Symptomen:
- Een zwelling ter hoogte van de navel die kan worden teruggeduwd
- De uitstulping is meestal zacht en samendrukbaar, maar is soms ook steviger.
- In sommige gevallen: buikpijn of verminderde eetlust
- Bij afsnoering van de darm: koliek

💡 Belangrijk om te weten:
- Bij veulens kunnen kleine navelbreuken vanzelf sluiten tijdens de eerste levensmaanden.
- Grotere breuken of breuken die niet vanzelf verkleinen, vereisen vaak chirurgische correctie.
- Tijdige behandeling voorkomt complicaties zoals beknelling van de darm, wat levensbedreigend kan zijn.

⚕️Behandeling:
- Monitoring van kleine breuken onder toezicht van een dierenarts
- Chirurgisch sluiten van de breuk bij grotere breuken of bij veulens ouder dan 6maanden

🌿 Met tijdige diagnose en juiste behandeling herstellen de veulens volledig en kunnen ze een gezond, actief leven leiden.

An umbilical hernia occurs when the abdominal wall around the navel does not close completely. As a result, a portion of abdominal contents (usually fat or intestine) can protrude through the opening in the abdominal wall. This is common in young foals but can, in rare cases, also occur in adult horses.

🔍 Symptoms:
- A swelling at the navel that can be pushed back in
- The protrusion may feel soft and compressible, but sometimes firmer
- In some cases: abdominal pain or reduced appetite
- If the intestine gets strangulated: colic

💡 Important to know:
- Small umbilical hernias in foals may close on their own during the first months of life.
- Larger hernias, or hernias that do not reduce on their own, often require surgical correction.
- Timely treatment prevents complications such as intestinal strangulation, which can be life-threatening.

⚕️ Treatment:
- Monitoring of small hernias under veterinary supervision
- Surgery for larger hernias or in foals older than 6 months.

🌿 With timely diagnosis and proper treatment, foals recover fully and can lead a healthy, active life.

Sinusitis is een ontsteking van de neusbijholten van het paard. Deze kunnen opgevuld geraken met slijm of etter, vaak door een tandprobleem, infectie of soms na een luchtweginfectie.

🔍 Hoe herken je het?
Let goed op deze signalen:
- Eenzijdige neusuitvloeiing (soms met een vieze geur)
- Zwelling onder het oog of aan één kant van het hoofd
- Moeilijk ademhalen of neusverstopping
- Verminderde eetlust of sloomheid
- Verminderde prestaties tijdens het rijden

🩺 Diagnose
We onderzoeken het paard grondig via:
- Klinisch onderzoek van hoofd en gebit
- Radiografisch onderzoek van de sinussen
- Soms een punctie of spoeling om de aard van het ontstekingsvocht te bepalen

💊 Behandeling
Afhankelijk van de oorzaak kan de behandeling bestaan uit:
- Antibiotica en ontstekingsremmers
- Tandbehandeling bij een onderliggende gebitsinfectie
- Sinus trepanatie en -spoeling om het opgehoopte materiaal te verwijderen
- In hardnekkige gevallen kan een chirurgische ingreep (sinus flap) nodig zijn om de sinus te draineren.

Paardenastma (voorheen RAO/COPD) is een chronische ontsteking van de diepe luchtwegen. Het ontstaat door irritatie door stof, schimmelsporen, pollen of ammoniak in de stal. Deze prikkels zorgen voor vernauwde luchtwegen en ophoping van slijm, waardoor het paard minder zuurstof kan opnemen.

✂️ 𝗚𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲 – een veilige optie onder steriele omstandigheden🐴

💉 Wat is het verschil met een open castratie?
Bij beide operaties wordt de zaadstreng zorgvuldig afgebonden. Bij een open castratie blijft de wonde open om natuurlijk te draineren.
Bij een gesloten castratie daarentegen wordt het onderhuidsweefsel en de huid volledig gehecht, waardoor de kans op infectie of bloeding kleiner is. Dit type ingreep gebeurt enkel in de kliniek, onder steriele omstandigheden en onder volledige narcose.

🩺 Wanneer kiezen voor een gesloten castratie?
👉 Bij hengsten ouder dan 3 jaar
👉 Wanneer de testikels diep in het lieskanaal liggen
👉 Bij hengsten met één of beide testikels niet volledig ingedaald (klophengsten)
👉 Wanneer extra hygiëne of controle gewenst is, bijvoorbeeld bij waardevolle sportpaarden

️ ⚕️ Voordelen van een gesloten castratie:
- Minder risico op nabloedingen, infecties of hernia
- Sneller en comfortabeler herstel
- Steriel en gecontroleerd verloop

✂️ 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – a safe option under sterile conditions 🐴

💉 What is the difference with an open castration?
In both procedures the spermatic cord is carefully ligated. In an open castration, the wound is left open to drain naturally.
During a closed castration, the subcutis and skin are fully closed, reducing the risk of infection or bleeding. This procedure is only performed in the clinic under sterile conditions and under general anesthesia.

🩺 When to choose a closed castration?
👉 in older stallions
👉 when the testicles are located deep in the inguinal canal
👉 in stallions with one or both testicles not fully descended (cryptorchids)
👉 when extra hygiene or control is desired, for example in valuable sport horses

⚕️ Benefits of a closed castration:
- lower risk of bleeding, infection and hernia
- faster and more comfortable recovery
- sterile and controlled procedure
- ideal for clinical follow-up and monitoring

🌿 Post-operative care in the clinic:
After the procedure, the horse usually stays for one day under observation. After that, a period of rest and controlled exercise at home follows.
