ABOUT:
Michael ( Mickey) Sandifer was sworn into office as Ward IV Council member in April 2004.
He served as councilman till January 2020 when he chose not to run for reelection.
Mickey moved to Shawnee in 1962, and has lived in Ward IV since 1996. He and his wife Dona raised four children together and were the proud grandparents of 18 grandchildren. Dona passed away after a long illness in 2018. Mickey and Dona were life-long members of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mickey remains active as a parish council member and usher for many years.
In 2022 Mickey married Kathy Lamas , ( a long time member of St Joe church) after the loss of her husband of 43 yrs, Jeff Lamas. Kathy and Jeff raised two daughters together and were the proud grandparents of 2 grandsons.
Mickey currently is employed by Sandifer leasing, Inc, a family owned and operated complex of industrial parks located in Kansas City,Kansas.
Before Mickey was in elected office he served on the Parks and Recreation Board and the Shawnee Planning Commission.
Mickey is a board member with the old Shawnee Days Society. He is a past trustee and past Grand Knight for Knights of Columbus Council 2332. In 2013 Mickey was named District Knight of the Year by the Knights of Columbus State Council of Kansas. Mickey is active in Shawnee Irish-American Club and German-American club. He also volunteers with Safe Home as a court advocate. Mickey is currently on the Johnson County Drug and Alcohol Council, current member of Johnson County Licensing Review Board Education Committee. He is a past member of greater Kansas City Homelessness Task Force and HMIS Governing Board System Functionality Committee. He served on the Johnson County Affordable Housing Task Force and the Johnson County Transportation Cooperation Council.
Mickey has received the Platinum level Certificate of Achievement in leadership Training with National League of Cities. He was appointed to the National League of Cities Human Development Steering Committee and the Leadership Fellows Committee. The committee is responsible for developing policy positions on issues involving social services, children and learning, poverty and income support, employment and workforce development, equal opportunity, Social Security and Seniors, individuals and disabilities, public health care, mental health parity and immigration reform.
Mickey was past chairman of Visit Shawnee. In 2018-2020 he was on BI- State Commission over Union Station serving the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.
Mickey received the Shawnee Citizen of the year in 2019.
