Many people think that Ashtanga Yoga is a set sequence of postures practiced in a specific way. But this is not true.
Practice should be adapted to the individual, not the other way around! There are different body types, different needs depending on age, gender, health, desire etc..
Even within Pattabhi Jois’ school (only one of many that existed in Mysore) everyone had an individual practice. Universal practice only developed when yoga became so popular that it is the only way to manage large numbers of students at the same time. It is a response to the mass market.
But yoga does not end with postures: a practice should evolve into pranayama and meditation and be supported by study of theory - only then will the deeper benefits and understanding arise.
Guy has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga, specialising in Mysore Style, for over 30 years. He is one of only 40 Advanced Teachers Certified by Pattabhi Jois (the only one in Israel). Author of the influential book Guruji: A Portrait of Pattabhi Jois, he was director of the Ashtanga Yoga Shala in New York for 25 years.
