Return to play by corrective exercise using multi sports and multi surfaces.
Bryan English:
Head of Medical Science and Fitness Middlesbrough FC
The aim of return to play should be to return the player in a more athletic condition than the day they were when he/she became injured.
Objectives. To increase the mental and physical agility of the player by producing rehabilitation that focuses on improvements of athleticism as well as technical ability.
Athletic development is the key as this produces a more robust and resilient player. Athleticism deals with speed, agility, flexibility, strength, stamina and grace. Sessions throughout rehabilitation/reconditioning will be designed to incorporate these areas with the use of multi sport related work and other aspects of physical development using combination of different surfaces.
The use of sand can be specifically incorporated into early and late stage rehabilitation. This surface is unique during exercise and cab be used for power, speed, agility, cardiovascular work.
The aim of this talk is to discuss the role of the doctor in the football medicine team and how return to play is a multi practitioner, multi sport, multi surface process. The talk will focus mainly on the use of sand and to justify it as a useful modality for work and ongoing research in relation to its benefit in football.
