A blood test to detect 50 types of cancer correctly finds the disease in nearly half of cases, researchers have said.
Scientists are hopeful that the simple test could one day be given once a year to everyone over 50 as a form of mass screening for many cancers.
Called Galleri and made by Grail, an American pharmaceutical firm, it looks for tiny fragments of tumour DNA in the blood to spot cancer early before symptoms begin.
It is now being tested on more than 140,000 NHS patients aged from 50 to 77, and the results are due next year.
Recent findings, based on data from 36,000 adults in the US, found that the test outperformed other screening programmes
