'Facial expressions are instilled in our facial muscles from an early age. A constantly frowning, bitter and resentful personality may establish those expressions in the facial muscles. The happy smiling child or adult will establish a different appearance. Every individual will develop a different demeanor in accordance with their emotional state and personality. As you work with the face, those patterns established from early childhood and throughout life may be contacted, potentially engaging with the deep underlying emotional patterns that created those expressions and with deeply ingrained memories of those times of life.

Allowing the face to express itself and release its patterns of tension and trauma can bring about profound changes as the patient lets go of the emotions that are contained within and expressed through the fascial muscles. It can enable profound physical connections with past dental or facial trauma, or birth patterns, or other structural associations between the face and the rest of the body. It can bring a deep sense of relaxation.'

Cranio-Sacral therapy tunes directly into the central nervous system, inducing a state of calm and relaxation allowing the mind and body the escape needed to recover.

Treatment is generally experienced as a profound relaxation and reintegration which may pervade the whole person, physically, mentally and emotionally, often accompanied by a feeling of lightness and ease.

This perfectly sums up the nature of our work, in the cranio-sacral therapy field.

This perfectly sums up the nature of our work, in the cranio-sacral therapy field.

The forces of nature which permeate our bodies and underlie our existence (described by William Sutherland as “the Breath of Life’) make us alive, creating and maintaining our individual vitality.⁣

This underlying vitality, pervading every cell, every tissue, every part of the body, is expressed as rhythmic motion - expanding and contracting, rising and falling, in wave like, tide-like motion (described by Sutherland as primary respiration - respiration because it feels like breathing, primary because it is more fundamental to life than thoracic respiration.)⁣

As this fundamental life force is expressed through the body, the particular way in which it is expressed in each person creates individual qualities, combinations of characteristics for that individual.⁣

The life force is expressed symmetrically through the body around the central midline. It is expressed as rhythmic motion. Cranio-sacral therapists identify and interpret changes in quality, symmetry and motion and through this information can assess and address the underlying causes of any disturbances.

Sometimes I wonder into myself like a stranger in a foreign town.
My hyperactive, inquisitive, at times, troubled mind has been trying to lead my way on these walks. It still does, when I let it.
But it isn’t the mind that can lead this kind of way. And I didn’t always know that. I found out when I began searching for other ways. When I got lost so many times that I realised - I ought to find a better guide!

Then along came someone who, in the midst of a grey, drizzly London afternoon, led me through a 10min mindfulness mediation. At the end of that, my mind stepped in and screamed – don’t kid yourself, it can never be that simple! But at that point, it was too late. I’d already experienced the power of simplicity. And a brand new (to me) way of being.

This of course, doesn’t last infinitely and requires discipline and devotion and it isn’t about a 10 minute sitting, nor is it about finding someone to show us how to. What it is about, is realising that THERE IS another way of being. Then leaving that realisation to lead the way.
If like me, you’re a seeker in this field, you may enjoy a 20min talk by my favorite teacher of mindfulness – Jon Kabat-Zinn. If the quality and intensity of his presence and the sincerity of his words, touches a part of you, it might be worth trying this out.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) founder Jon Kabat-Zinn talks about what mindfulness is, what it isn't, and how we can use mindful techniques to imp...
