What is the secret of Psyche, the Soul which contains all other secrets?
Pythagoras assumes that the human spirit, the mind, has assumed from God its immortal, invisible, and absolutely active nature since it is the spirit that moves alone. He calls the body the mortal, dismemberable, and passive part of the spirit. According to him, that which we call soul is intimately connected with spirit, but is composed of a third auxiliary element which is derived from the cosmic fluid. So the soul resembles an ethereal body that the spirit creates. Without this ethereal body, the material could not function; it would be a motionless and lifeless co**se. The soul has the form of the body which it animates and outlives after death and decay. It then becomes a light chariot that lifts the spirit into the divine realms, or else lets it fall again into the dark regions of matter, according to its merits. So the constitution and evolution of man is repeated in growing circles all along the ladder of beings and in all realms. Just as the human soul is torn between the spirit that draws it and the body that holds it, so mankind evolves between the animal or natural world, where its earthly roots are, and the divine world, where its divine source is to be found, to which it aspires. Питагор допуска че човешкия дух, разумът, е приел от Бога безсмъртната си, невидима и абсолютно деятелна природа, понеже духът е това, което се движи само. Той нарича тялото смъртната, разчленима и пасивна част на духа. Според него, онова, което наричаме душа, е тясно свързано с духа, но е съставено от трети помощен елемент, който произлиза от космичния флуид. Така че душата прилича на ефирно тяло, което духът създава. Без това ефирно тяло, материалното не би могло да действа, би било неподвижен и безжизнен труп. Душата има формата на тялото, което тя ожитворява и надживява след смъртта и разлагането. Тогава тя се превръща в лека колесница, която издига духа в божествените сфери, или пък го оставя да падне отново в тъмните зони на материята – според заслугите му. Така че строежът и еволюцията на човека се повтарят в растящи кръгове по цялата стълба на съществата и във всички сфери.
