""Three years ago, I never thought I'd step foot on the gymnastics floor again just because of everything that had happened," she told reporters at a press conference after winning the individual all-around medal. "But with the help of [my coach] Cecile [Landi], I got back in the gym and worked really hard mentally and physically. Even this morning at 7:00 a.m., I saw my therapist. And there's a time change, so she is so amazing for allowing me to do that these couple of days here in Paris."

"I was just making sure I'm mentally well, and I think you see that out on the competition floor," she added.

Simone does therapy "religiously" every Thursday, adding in sessions "whenever I need it" before big competitions."

"But human cognition, Dennett emphasizes, still consists mainly of competence without comprehension. Our conscious thoughts represent a minute fraction of all the information processing carried out by our brain. Natural selection designed our brain to provide us with thoughts on a “need to know” basis, so we’re not overwhelmed with data.

Dennett compares consciousness to the user interface of a computer. The contents of our awareness, he asserts, bear the same relation to our brain that the little folders and other icons on the screen of a computer bear to its underlying circuitry and software. Our perceptions, memories and emotions are grossly simplified, cartoonish representations of hidden, hideously complex computations.

None of this is novel or controversial. Dennett is just reiterating, in his oh-so-clever, neologorrheic fashion, what mind scientists and most educated layfolk have long accepted: that the bulk of cognition happens beneath the surface of awareness. Dennett even thanks the much-vilified Sigmund Freud for his “championing of unconscious motivations”!"

"A charity that has helped almost 4,000 people with their mental health say some boys in the area are "suffering in silence".

TIC+ offers support and counselling, but said only 30% of those accessing its services were male.
The help available could make "life and death" differences in some cases, the Mitcheldean-based charity says."

"The charity wants to level up mental health provision across disadvantaged areas to prevent deterioration in mental wellbeing and work towards reducing incidents of self-harm and suicidal thoughts among young men.

The TIC+ Boys in Mind project aims to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of mental ill health, ensure young males know about the support available, and to encourage them to seek help at an early stage to prevent issues becoming embedded in later life."
