Exactly a week ago, my youngest daughter, Aimy turned 6!

Each year around our childrens' birthdays, us moms remember back to the day they were born. We reminisce how tiny they were and how grown up they are now.

We also remember back to how we felt when they were born. The words I would use to describe this birth are: supportive, controlled, gentle an surrender. Oh boy did I have to surrender!

This was the birth of my little Aimy. I had an amazing Doctor, Doula, Birth Photographer and my husband through this labour and delivery. My whole birth TEAM created the space for me to have the birth that I wanted. I felt supported and my decisions respected.

Giving birth to a baby can be messy and raw. If you have the right birthing team on your side, you can come out the other side feeling empowered and strong enough to handle all the trials and tribulations of becoming a new mother (again)

Throwback Thursday...to this time, 6 years ago.

My second pregnancy was easier than my first. Probably because I was so busy being a mom to a toddler, I didn't have much time or energy to worry about every aspect of my pregnancy.

Now, I'm a mum to 2 amazing and strong willed daughters. Its not always easy (in fact most times its not) but, its so worth it!

Not all women feel bonded to their baby straight away. I know from personal experience.

Skin to skin right after birth helps this bond form. For some mothers its instant and for some mothers, it takes some time.

Please don't worry that you are doing something wrong. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself the space to go through the emotions you feel. There is no right or wrong way to be a great mother.

Fact: Birthing your baby is not an easy task. It doesn't matter if you have a c-section or a natural birth.

Bottom line is that you need someone with you, who is there to support you, to encourage you and most importantly...to remind you that you can do it and that you ARE doing it.

This is what I've just finished reading...

What a fantastic book, I wish I had read this book before I birthed my babies. Its written by a legendary Midwife called Ina May, who has attended thousands of births.

The way Ina sees and approaches birth is so UN-complicated. Its amazing what a woman's body can achieve, if she is supported holistically and allowed the time and space to birth her baby.

How we bring our children into the world is such a powerful foundation for humanity. Why wouldn't we harness this?

If you are pregnant or planning on having a baby, do yourself a favour and READ THIS BOOK!

When you are in labour, your uterus is using powerful contractions to help your baby enter the world.

Some may say that contractions are painful, some say pleasurable. Either way, they are definitely powerful!

Relaxing your body and focusing on your breath will allow your body to do its job, most efficiently.

Fighting against those powerful contractions will certainly make your labour take longer and its most likely to be painful.

Allow your body to relax and accept the contractions. Each one bringing you closer to meeting your baby.

Your breath is your anchor...

As a baby is born into the world, so is the mother born into her new self...

This transition from pregnancy to becoming a mother is a sacred moment in time that will be remembered for the rest of that mothers life.

International Doula week allows us to pay homage to all the women who have supported mothers through the most vulnerable and empowering time of their lives.

I am honoured to do this work.

Asking your partner to be your sole guide through labor is like asking your partner to lead the way on a climb of Mount Everest.

Your partner may be smart and trustworthy and you love this person, but in the Himalayas you'll both be better off with a Sherpa.

This is usually a question that every new mother spends hours googling :-) and for good reason... fear of the unknown is a big one!

So I'm here to give you the closest description I can. Contractions feel like period cramps. Of course the contractions change in intensity and location, as the baby moves down the birth canal.

If you aren't sure if you're in labour, the best thing to do is get into a nice warm bath. Stay there for exactly an hour, no less. Warm water helps to relax the body and should help regulate contractions, so that you can start to time them.
