A strong immune system helps to keep a person healthy. Can specific foods boost the immune system?

The immune system consists of organs, cells, tissues, and proteins. Together, these carry out bodily processes that fight off pathogens, which are the viruses, bacteria, and foreign bodies that cause infection or disease.

When the immune system comes into contact with a pathogen, it triggers an immune response.

The immune system releases antibodies, which attach to antigens on the pathogens and kill them.

A healthful, balanced diet plays a vital role in staying well. The following foods may help to boost the immune system:

1. Blueberries
2. Dark chocolate
3. Turmeric
4. Oily fish
5. Broccoli
6. Sweet potatoes
7. Spinach
8. Ginger
9. Garlic
10. Green Tea
11. Kefir
12. Sunflower seeds
13. Almonds
14. Oranges or kiwifruit (kiwis)
15. Red bell pepper

Enjoying the 15 immune-boosting foods covered in this article may strengthen people’s immune system and improve their ability to fight off infections.

That said, it is important to remember that the immune system is complex. Eating a healthful, balanced diet is just one way to support immune health.

It is also essential to be mindful of the other lifestyle factors that may affect immune system health, such as exercising and not smoking.

Anyone who gets frequent colds or other illnesses and is concerned about their immune system should speak to a doctor.

Doctors may use several different terms to describe tendon injuries. These terms are often confused and used interchangeably, however, each term has its own unique meaning. With regard to chronic tendon injuries, the 3 most common terms that you’re likely to hear are:

Tendonitis occurs when a tendon is irritated and/or inflamed. This inflammation usually occurs due to small (micro) tears in the tendon.1
See Wrist Tendonitis vs. Sprain

Tendinosis is the chronic non-inflammatory degeneration of a tendon. Tendinosis may develop as a result of chronic tendonitis or due to repetitive strain-injuries to a tendon without adequate time to heal.

Tendinopathy is often used to describe any problem with a tendon. These problems include tendonitis and tendinosis, as well as tendon tears and inflammation of membranes around a tendon.

When a tendon becomes painful, it is often assumed to be tendonitis. However, research suggests tendonitis is less common than tendinosis, and tendinosis is often misdiagnosed as tendonitis. Pain from either condition is considered to be the result of nerve transmission and other chemical irritants in a tendon, and not from inflammation.

Almost all tendon injuries can be diagnosed by a medical professional with the help of a physical examination and medical imaging techniques. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are particularly useful in viewing characteristic tendon changes in tendinopathy.

Tendons are rope-like bundles or bands of strong, smooth, shiny fibres that attach muscles to bones. Tendons transfer force from the muscle to the bone to produce the movement of joints.

Tendon disorders, or tendinopathies, are medical conditions that result in the tendons not functioning normally. Tendinitis is a disorder of tendons without sheaths and tenosynovitis is a disorder of tendons with sheaths.

- Shoulder tendinopathy. The most common tendon disorders of the shoulder are bicipital tendinopathy and rotator cuff tendinopathy.
- Elbow tendinopathy.
- Hand and wrist tendinopathy.
- Patellar (knee) tendinitis.

What are the symptoms?
The clinical presentation of tendon disorders is characterized by the presence of pain on the site of injury. Often, there is a decrease in strength or functional ability as well. Specific physical findings on examination include tenderness when the area over the affected tendon is touched and may be associated with swelling, redness, and restriction of movement.

What causes tendon disorders?
Often it is a combination of factors that leads to a tendon disorder, and every situation is unique. Causes can include overuse as well as age, injury, or disease related changes in the tendon. Risk factors for tendon disorders can include excessive force, repetitive movements, frequent overhead reaching, vibration, and awkward postures.

What is the treatment?
Treatment of tendon disorders is of a conservative nature and rarely requires surgery.

Avoiding those activities that caused or aggravated the disorder will prevent the condition from persisting or recurring. Pain relievers, corticosteroids or platelet-rich plasma may be options to discuss with your medical professional. Physical therapy can help stretch and strengthen the affected muscles and tendons.

A tendon is a cord of strong, flexible tissue, similar to a rope. Tendons connect your muscles to your bones. Tendons let us move our limbs. They also help prevent muscle injury by absorbing some of the impact your muscles take when you run, jump or do other movements. Your body contains thousands of tendons.

Each muscle has two tendons, one proximally and one distally. The point at which the tendon forms attachment to the muscle is also known as the musculotendinous junction (MTJ) and the point at which it attaches to the bone is known as the osteotendinous junction (OTJ).

A bunch of collagen fibers forms a primary fiber bundle, and a group of primary fiber bundles forms a secondary fiber bundle. A group of secondary fiber bundles, in turn, forms a tertiary bundle, and the tertiary bundles make up the tendon.

Muscle tears denotes damage to a muscle and its attached tendons caused by any undue or accidental pressure. Such tear of the muscle may take place at any moment during day-to-day activities, while playing or during any other occasions.

Extent of damage from a muscle tear depends on the pressure released on the muscle by any external source or through any activity. In some instances, part or whole of the muscle fibers are affected, while in severe cases the tendons attached with the muscle also get damaged. Again in many instances, the damage may be as severe as causing bleeding or bruising and irritation due to damaged nerves.

Muscle tear can happen in any part of the body, but records show that common people are mostly affected by muscle tear in neck, lower back, shoulder and hamstrings.

The 3 types of muscle tissue are cardiac, smooth, and skeletal. Cardiac muscle cells are located in the walls of the heart, appear striped (striated), and are under involuntary control.

Smooth muscle fibers are located in walls of hollow visceral organs (such as the liver, pancreas, and intestines), except the heart, appear spindle-shaped, and are also under involuntary control.

Skeletal muscle fibers occur in muscles which are attached to the skeleton. They are striated in appearance and are under voluntary control.

Skeletal: As part of the musculoskeletal system, these muscles work with your bones, tendons and ligaments. Tendons attach skeletal muscles to bones all over your body.
Cardiac: These muscles line the heart walls.
Smooth: These muscles line the insides of organs such as the bladder, stomach and intestines.

To keep your muscles strong, maintain a healthy weight, eat right and exercise regularly.

Muscles are soft tissues. Many stretchy fibers make up your muscles. You have more than 600 muscles in your body. Different types of muscles have different jobs. Some muscles help you run, jump or perform delicate tasks like threading a needle. Other muscles allow you to breathe or digest food. Your heart is a hard-working muscle that beats thousands of times a day.

Many disorders, injuries and diseases can affect how muscles work. These conditions can cause muscle pain, muscle spasms or muscle weakness. More severe disorders can lead to paralysis. Cardiomyopathy and other kinds of heart disease make it difficult for the heart to pump blood through the body.

Living a healthy lifestyle helps your muscles work like they should. You can keep your muscles strong by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise. Be sure to see your provider regularly to screen for diseases and conditions that can lead to muscle problems.

02/02/2022

A muscle spasm, also known as a muscle cramp or “charley horse,” is an involuntary contraction of a muscle that occurs suddenly and does not relax. Although muscle spasms can happen to any muscle, the most commonly affected muscle groups are:
Back of lower leg/calf.
Back of thigh.
Front of thigh.
Feet, hands, and arms.
Abdomen and ribcage.

The exact cause of muscle spasms is unknown. Some researchers believe factors such as poor stretching and conditioning, muscle fatigue, exercising or working in intense heat, dehydration, and depletion of salt and electrolytes contribute to muscle spasms.
Those who are at the highest risk of getting muscle spasms include infants, young children, and people over the age of 65. Other factors that can put people at a greater risk for muscle spasms include:
Certain medications. Being overweight.
Illness.. Overexerting during work or exercise.
Muscle spasms are most common among athletes – specifically endurance athletes like marathon runners.

SYMPTOMS
Muscle spasms range in intensity and can be mild to extremely painful. A spasm may cause the muscle to feel hard to the touch, appear visibly distorted, or twitch. These spasms can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours and may reoccur many times before they entirely go away.

Muscle spasms usually go away on their own without having to see a doctor. When a muscle spasm occurs, you should:
Stop whatever activity triggered the cramp.
Gently stretch and massage the muscle, holding it in a stretched position until the cramp goes away.
Apply heat to tight/tense muscles.

To avoid future cramps, do regular flexibility stretches and exercises before and after you work out to stretch muscle groups most prone to cramping. Some of the best muscles to stretch are the calves, hamstring, quadriceps.
