Progress in Community Health: The Village Microclinic Sees Rise in Prenatal and Vaccination Services

The Village Microclinic is witnessing a promising increase in both prenatal consultations and childhood vaccinations—signs of growing trust and engagement from the local community in maternal and child health services.

This success is largely attributed to the tireless efforts of community health workers. Through consistent home visits and educational outreach, they are equipping families with essential knowledge about the benefits of prenatal care and timely vaccinations. These grassroots initiatives are helping to promote healthier practices and improve overall health outcomes.

With a strong focus on community-based care, The Village Microclinic has cultivated lasting relationships with local residents. The result is a notable rise in daily clinic attendance—underscoring the effectiveness of its prevention-oriented and education-driven healthcare model.

Why It Matters:
• Vaccinations & Postnatal Care: These services provide newborns with essential medical attention to support healthy development and long-term well-being.
• Prenatal Consultations: Expectant mothers gain access to comprehensive care that ensures safer pregnancies and deliveries.

At The Village Microclinic, we continue to prioritize student health through its expanding School Health Club program, aimed at fostering hygiene awareness and practices among pupils in both primary and secondary schools. Most recently, the initiative reached the Lycée Communal de Gishingano, where an engaging hygiene awareness session was held by our team members Consolate Ndihokubwayo and Gérard Nkunzimana.

The session, held on May 14, focused on the effective use of chlorine for cleaning and disinfection. Students participated in a hands-on demonstration led by Ndihokubwayo, who showed how to properly dilute chlorine in water. The demonstration sparked keen interest, with students actively participating and raising questions about chlorine’s composition, production methods, and applications.

Speaking during the session, Gérard Nkunzimana highlighted the broader objectives of the School Health Clubs. “Our goal is not only to teach hygiene practices but also to equip students with comprehensive knowledge about health and well-being,” he said.

Our interventions are focused on patient needs beyond medical care through a holistic approach to health. “We want to create a world where access to prevention and health services is not a privilege but an unalienable right. We want to treat everyone as a complete individual with physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs”, says Dr. Tharcisse Nshimirimana, founder and CEO of The Village Microclinic.

The Village Microclinic’s health services delivery is therefore based on 5 pillars namely child and maternal health, reproductive health, Non-Communicable Diseases Prevention and Management, HIV community care and support, Adult health. Nevertheless, the main focus of The Village Microclinic is the improvement of child and maternal health in Burundi to achieve sustainable development for communities of Burundi.
