As part of the commemoration of the International Day of Midwives (5 May 2026), The Midwife in Action's Association:M.A.A :Vyara Uheke (MAA) successfully organized a voluntary blood donation drive under the theme:
👉 “4,000 More Midwives for Burundi — ”
In collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Center (C**S) and MInor Seminary of Kanyosha , this important initiative brought together students, midwives, health professionals, local authorities, faith-based organizations, media, and community members — all united for one lifesaving cause ❤️
🩸 Why this matters:
Safe blood is essential for emergency obstetric and neonatal care, especially in managing complications like postpartum hemorrhage — still the leading cause of maternal mortality in Burundi. With an estimated 299 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, the need for action remains urgent.
👏 Thanks to all the voluntary donors and partners who answered the call. Your contribution is helping save lives and giving hope to mothers and newborns across the country.
💬 This activity also served as a powerful platform to highlight the critical role of midwives and to advocate for increased investment in maternal health services in Burundi.

🌍 Résultats du projet Vyara Uheke – Janvier & Février 2026
Grâce au financement de l’OMS Burundi, l’Association Midwife in Action (MAA Burundi) poursuit ses efforts pour améliorer l’accès aux soins de santé des réfugiés du site de Cishemere BDS Cibitoke sous la supervision et coordination du Ministère de la Santé Publique et de la Lutte contre le Sida / Burundi via BPS Bujumbura et BDS Cibitoke ainsi que CDS Murambi .
📊 Quelques résultats clés en seulement deux mois :
• 🏥 9 805 consultations curatives réalisées
• 🤰 904 consultations prénatales et 211 postnatales
• 🧒 163 cas de malnutrition aiguë dépistés et pris en charge
• 🚑 57 cas d’accouchements référés pour une prise en charge sécurisée
• 🧬 16 cas de VIH pris en charge
• 💉 405 femmes enceintes vaccinées contre le tétanos (VAT)
• ⚖️ 53 cas de violences basées sur le genre (VBG) pris en charge
• 📢 2 237 ménages sensibilisés sur la santé, la prévention des maladies et la lutte contre les violences et abus
👩🏽‍⚕️ Renforcement des capacités :
✔️ 70 prestataires formés sur les soins humanisés, la réanimation néonatale et la prévention des VBG
✔️ 5 supervisions réalisées pour garantir la qualité des services
💬 Ces résultats témoignent de l’impact concret d’une action coordonnée et centrée sur les besoins des populations vulnérables. Ensemble, nous continuons à sauver des vies et à redonner espoir.
