🌿Gninkpotinman (Fon)

Native to West Africa, this dark green to maroon hued bush plant contains an array of medicinal properties + is considered a sacred.

The leaves + roots are prepared as a tea to treat blood disorders, stimulate digestion + support detoxification. Though nonpoisonous, the woody bark + bright green berries are not consumed.

Gninkpotinman is planted along the periphery of one’s property as a form of spiritual protection. Commonly found in vodusi’s gardens, it attracts the vodun + ancestors while repelling malevolent spirits.

One will recognize this by the gathering of butterflies throughout the day. Among the Fon + across various other cultures butterflies represent our ancestors’ presence, symbolizing their transition beyond this realm.🦋✨
