Pregnancy is not an illness. It is unethical to ask low risk birthing people to have to choose between their partner or a doula when in labour. The role of the doula is to work with the birthing person and whoever supports them - never to take the place of those who love and care for the pregnant person.

How is it that during a time where the hospital is pleading for people to refrain from entering unless absolutely necessary, that a healthy newborn’s ONLY option is to be birthed in an environment deemed disastrous?

We are in a state of emergency. Birth is not an emergency. Birth is a natural, normal physiological event that has taken place for thousands of years. We deserve and quite frankly, NEED better options.

We need the support of all who hold regard for birthing people and their loved ones. Upholding their rights and well- being are crucial, for they are the ones nurturing and developing the newest members in our society.

We need to be heard and regarded. Please take the survey and let your voice be counted.

The racial disparity in breastfeeding rates stems directly from the centuries of slavery. Swipe 👉🏽

Enslaved women were forced to be wet nurses for their enslaver's children, usually having to neglect their own babies to do so. These babies often starved to death or developed complications due to malnutrition. A deeply rooted aversion to breastfeeding began.

Having a wet nurse, then eventually using formula, was seen as fashionable and a status of wealth. Though women of color could, and had been breastfeeding their own children alongside the children of those that held them captive, it slowly became a symbol of shame and poverty.

We continue to perpetuate this thinking today by glorifying formula feeding over breastfeeding through shaming, s*xualization and the lack of support in work and home life. There's so much history and trauma to unpack in black parenting. This is why is important. 🌺

Introducing The Doula Difference (although these ladies need no introductions😆) Fiona and Genee, and I have been working collaboratively over the last ten months. The response from clients has been nothing but positive, and we are now excited to announce the launch of our doula collective website: www.douladifference.com. 🎉🎉🎉

Every birth attended gets a doula's full 100% attention, skill and service no matter what's happening in the outside world. The birth world is it's own microcosm; what's happening with the birthing parent is the top priority, then baby and the birth partner. Even though the world is a mess of issues, this space in here is created to be safe and comfortable according to the birthing person's needs. We are a collective that takes care of you so you can focus on bringing your baby earth side.

Here is in PPE supporting a client in a beautiful birth. There was low lighting, relaxing frequency music, essential oils, heating pad, plenty of water and coconut water and the support of a very attentive midwife on the ward. Let the world rage on, we're fine in here 🌍

There were 540 births in 2020 in Bermuda, only 1 was a home birth.

Yet there are so many benefits to birthing at home with a midwife.

Would you choose a home birth?
Why or why not?
What would need to be different for you to choose to birth at home?

We respect and support all choices and preferences.
....

Reposted from Reva.lution Today is International Homebirth Day. Most people have a stereotypical view of homebirth and what it looks like; gory, unsafe and for hippie-ish folks. Wrong 🤗.

Homebirth can be as varied as any other birth. It can be as little as just the birthing parents there or as many people as wanted (I had 5 at both of mine). Homebirth can be medicated, unassisted, or in some cases interrupted to transfer to a hospital.

Homebirth is not an option for everyone but it IS an option, can look how you want (in most cases depending on the midwife present, if there is one) and can go just as unplanned as any other birth.

That's the beauty of birth to me, it's so unpredictable how we bring these little people into this world. No matter how we plan or envision our births, these tiny people come when they're ready and we're just along for the ride.

If you have any questions about homebirth please feel free to comment or send me a DM.

Reposted • .mami.bda It’s Black Babywearing Week!

Did you know aside from it’s obvious need Babywearing can bring many benefits for you and your baby. It’s convenient. It has been linked to less crying and fussiness in baby. Your bond can grow stronger. Helps with baby’s cognitive and social development. It’s known to reduce postpartum depression with comfort and closeness. And it’s an age old practice that dates far back in our ancestral lineage.

Of course baby wearing isn’t always so convenient in the hotter months and should be done properly for safety reasons. As a holistic doula, I offer baby wrapping tutorials for clients and encourage them to try!

“As sovereign beings it is imperative that we stand in ownership of ourselves. This means first taking responsibility of our bodies, mind and spirit each and every day. It may mean changing the way we eat, move, rest and think. In this discussion we will explore tools to improve the immune system and regulate the nervous system in an effort to change the relationship with our selves and health . Please join with an open heart and mind. 💙”

It is ok to want assurance that this newly released therapy will not cause any harm to your baby or have long-term impact on yours and their future health. As you weigh up the risks versus benefits for you and your baby, here are some questions you can ask your OB or your trusted healthcare provider.

==> What is the data in Bermuda for mothers and babies who have contracted the virus, and resulted in a negative birth outcome?

==> Has it been proven safe for pregnant women and their babies?

==> Can you provide me with more information on the studies conducted and their findings?

==> Is there an ideal time during pregnancy to get the shots?

==> What other options do I have to protect myself and my baby from the virus?

In addition, be encouraged to listen to your body for some of the answers. Your maternal instinct is awakened during pregnancy, and remains for as long as you are a parent. Ask yourself:

> How does it feel in your gut and heart when you think about taking the shot?

We are honored that Reva is a member of our collective. 💚

Posted • Hiring a doula helps cut down on the likelihood of you needing a cesarean, needing medical intervention, experiencing trauma and having an unsatisfying birth experience. Why should you hire THIS doula? Let's see:

I understand and honor the power of a womxn's body and the magic that happens when left to progress naturally

I give you facts and evidence based information to make your own decisions that works best for you and your family

I hold space for you and the decisions you make. I do not judge. I do not push. I stand beside your decision to birth how you wish

I work with you and your birth partner to prepare you for your baby's arrival, teaching you ways to be together in comfort and connection

I gift you a free energy session to help clear limiting beliefs holding you back from your truest potential

I am with you prenatally. I am with you during your labor. I am with you during birth and I am with you in your postpartum period.

Interested in learning more about me and my doula work? Consultations are free. Book now using the Services link in my bio. I look forward to connecting with you.

Good reproductive health includes s*xual health and is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system, at all stages of life.

It implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe s*x life, the capability to reproduce, and the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so.

And, we believe, so much more...

The practices of good reproductive health and womb wisdom were traditionally passed down from grandmother to mother to child.

A lot of this generational sharing of wisdom was disrupted or altered through patriarchy, white supremacist actions, and the industrialisation of reproductive health and birthing.

But it was never really lost. Ancestral wisdom and holistic practices are still available to us, ready and waiting to be remembered.

It's time for us to remember!
