👣 Talking Toes on Tuesday – November Edition! 👣

Tune in to Power95 at 7:15am and Ocean89 at 7:45am as we step into Diabetes Awareness Month with this month’s episode of Talking Toes on Tuesday!

Did you know diabetes can affect the nerves and blood flow in your feet — often without you even realising? 🦶 Reduced sensation and circulation can lead to wounds that don’t heal properly, increasing the risk of infection and serious complications.

That’s where podiatrists come in! 👩‍⚕️ During a Diabetic Foot Exam (recommended every 6 months for anyone diabetic or pre-diabetic), we check:
🩶 Skin colour & temperature – to assess blood flow
🔍 Dermatological signs – such as wounds, infections, or poor healing
💓 Pulses & capillary refill – to monitor circulation
⚡ Neurological response – to detect any nerve damage

If you’re diabetic and have a history of wounds on your feet or lower limbs, you should be checked regularly by a podiatrist to help prevent further complications.

Podiatrists can also perform routine nail care to safely trim your nails — reducing the risk of cuts, infections, and other issues that could cause serious problems for those with diabetes. ✂️🦶

After your assessment, you’ll be classified as low, medium, or high risk, and your results will be shared with your GP — ensuring we’re all on the same foot when it comes to your care. 👟

Prevention is the best protection — regular checks can help you stay one step ahead of diabetes-related complications.

Flat Feet? Let’s Talk Support! 👣

Flat feet (fallen arches) are more common than you think — and while they might not always cause pain, they can lead to issues like heel pain, knee discomfort, or even back problems over time.

That’s where custom orthotics come in. Unlike over-the-counter inserts that offer generic cushioning, custom orthotics are designed specifically for your feet — providing precise arch support, improving alignment, and relieving pressure points.

At Atlantic Podiatry, our podiatrists use detailed foot assessments and gait analysis to identify the root cause of discomfort. Whether it’s flat feet, plantar fasciitis, or other biomechanical issues, we tailor your treatment to restore balance and keep you moving comfortably.

👟 Custom vs. Over-the-Counter Orthotics
✅ Custom: Personalized fit, long-term correction, and medical-grade support
⚪️ OTC: Short-term comfort, generic design, limited biomechanical correction

Your feet are the foundation of your body — they deserve expert care and the right support.

Book an assessment with one of our podiatrists today and step towards better comfort and mobility!

🚶‍♂️ Aches & Pains in Your Feet? Let’s Talk.

Whether you’re walking, standing at work, or exercising, foot pain can hold you back. Here are some common issues and how they often present:

Heel pain (Plantar Fasciitis): Sharp pain under the heel, often worse with your first steps in the morning.

Ball of foot pain (Metatarsalgia): Burning or aching under the forefoot, especially after long periods on your feet.

Arch pain: Can feel like cramping or pulling in the mid-foot—sometimes linked to flat feet or high arches.

Ankle pain: Aching, swelling, or instability may suggest tendon issues, sprains, or arthritis.

Toe pain: From bunions to ingrown nails, discomfort here can quickly make shoes unbearable.

👩‍⚕️ How We Can Help:
Podiatrists use a wide range of treatments depending on your needs, including:

Custom orthotics to improve foot alignment

Shockwave therapy for stubborn heel pain

Footwear advice & activity modification

Hands-on treatments for nails, corns, & calluses

Targeted exercises & rehabilitation plans

👣 Itchy, flaky, red feet? It might be Athlete’s Foot!

👣As the summer heats up, so do your feet — and that means conditions like Athlete’s Foot become more common.

🦠 What is it?
Athlete’s Foot is a fungal infection that thrives in warm, moist environments — think sweaty trainers, damp socks, or gym showers.

🔍 How does it look?
You might notice:
- Cracked, peeling or dry skin (especially between the toes)
- Redness, itching or burning
- Blisters or sore patches

⚠️ Commonly mistaken for:
Dry skin, eczema, or even psoriasis — but unlike those, fungal infections spread and can worsen quickly if left untreated.

👨‍⚕️ The good news?
At Atlantic Podiatry, we can diagnose it properly and get you started on a simple, effective treatment plan. We stock creams, sprays, and offer professional advice to clear it up fast — so you can enjoy the summer itch-free and confident.
