The IEA (International Energy Agency) just released the Solar Heat Worldwide, market and contribution to the energy supply 2010. While non of the results were a surprise there were some interesting figures that I would like to share.
1. There are approximately 53 million solar thermal installation world wide and of those 85% are single family domestic water heating systems.
2. Solar Thermal installation world wide generated 173 GW equal to 16.1 million tons of oil and offset 49.5 million tons of C02 emissions.
While these numbers seem impressive and no doubt are a step in the right direction we have to remember that 53 million services only a very small percentage of the earths population and we are a long way from sustainability.
