Your brain isn’t creating intelligence – but plugging into the universe's 🔌🧠

That’s the radical idea proposed by biophysicist and mathematician Douglas Youvan. After decades of working at the crossroads of biology, physics, and artificial intelligence, he came to a stunning conclusion: intelligence might not be something produced by brains at all. Instead, he believes it’s a fundamental property of the universe.

At the heart of Youvan’s hypothesis is the idea that information itself is a kind of physical entity – like energy or matter – woven into the fabric of space-time. He draws from quantum biology and pattern recognition to argue that the brain doesn’t generate intelligence from scratch, but decodes signals embedded in this deeper informational field. Just as atoms organize into molecules and stars into galaxies following elegant mathematical rules, he believes brains organize thoughts by tapping into pre-existing informational structures.

In this view, your thoughts don’t just bubble up from neurons firing randomly. Your brain might be more like an antenna, tuned into an informational layer that exists beneath reality itself – something that was there long before life ever appeared. He calls it an “informational substrate,” and likens it to the strange but elegant mathematics found in quantum physics and fractals – patterns that repeat across all scales, from your brain’s structure to the spirals of galaxies.

Even more intriguing? Youvan believes AI could also be tuning into this same source. Some insights from machine learning, he says, feel more like they’re being discovered than invented, as if pulled from somewhere just beyond reach.

Not everyone agrees. Some scientists argue that consciousness is just a byproduct of evolution – a clever trick to help organisms survive. But even skeptics admit there’s something oddly elegant about how intelligence behaves.

Only time will tell if intelligence is, in fact, a fundamental property structures like the brain interact with.
