Breogán is a legendary figure rooted in both Irish and Gallaecian mythology (Galicia, Northern Portugal, Léon and West Asturias), prominently featured in the Lebor Gabála Érenn (The Book of Invasions), a medieval pseudo-historical text that narrates the mythical origins of the Irish people.
According to the Lebor Gabála Érenn, Breogán was a Celtic king who led his people to settle in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, in an area corresponding to modern-day Galicia, Northern Portugal, Léon and Asturias). There, he founded the city of Brigantia—likely present-day A Coruña—and constructed a towering edifice known as Breogán's Tower. From its summit, his son Íth purportedly glimpsed the distant land of Ireland, prompting an expedition that would eventually lead to the Milesian conquest of the island. Breogán is considered the father of Bile, who in turn fathered Míl Espáine (Milesius), the progenitor of the Milesians, believed in myth to be the ancestors of the Irish Gaels.
In Galicia, Breogán is revered as a foundational figure. The Galician national anthem, "Os Pinos," refers to Galicia as the "Nation of Breogán," underscoring his symbolic importance. A prominent statue of Breogán stands near the Tower of Hercules in A Coruña, and his legacy is commemorated in various ways, including the naming of the professional basketball team CB Breogán in Lugo and the Parque de Breogán in Madrid.
While Breogán's story is mythological, some scholars have drawn parallels between these legends and historical migrations. A 2006 genetic study by Oxford University suggested that a significant portion of the British Isles' population descends from Neolithic farmers originating in the coastal regions of northern Spain and Portugal lending a layer of historical plausibility to the tales of Iberian origins for the Irish Gaels.
