We are pleased to share the publication “Challenges and opportunities for sarcoma care and research in Latin America: a position paper from the LACOG sarcoma group” in the The Lancet Regional Health Americas by LACOG Sacroma Group Chair Dr. Roberto Carmagnani Pestana, MD and other authors.

According to Dr. Roberto, LACOG Sarcoma Group recognizes the limited availability of clinical trials and the significant challenges faced by patients with sarcoma in Latin America. Patients face critical obstacles such as delayed diagnosis, inadequate access to specialized care, and socioeconomic disparities. To address these issues, the article propose an ambitious set of recommendations for progress that emphasizes strengthening regional collaboration, expanding clinical trial opportunities, and fostering the development of multidisciplinary sarcoma care teams.

It is a pleasure to share with you this recent publication “Development of geriatric oncology in Latin America: A report from the Latin American Cooperative Oncology Group”, in the Journal of Geriatric Oncology by Dr. Luciola Pontes and other authors from the LACOG Geriatric Oncology Group.

Patients ages 65 and above represent >50% of patients with cancer in LATAM. This scenario poses a real health emergency, necessitating LA nations to prioritize the development of infrastructure to provide quality care to the increased number of older adults affected by cancer.

Geriatric oncology has increased its reach across the Latin American region in the last five years, highlighting the advances taking place in Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. The need to improve the care of all adults with cancer is clearly a priority in LMIC globally, including Latin America, and policymakers in developing regions should focus on fulfilling the recommendations outlined by the SIOG priorities for the advancement of geriatric oncology, including improving geriatric oncology education, performing routine geriatric assessments as standard of care, and fostering inclusive research for older adults.

Although geriatric oncology has grown exponentially in LATAM over the last five years, there is still a lot of work to be done to fulfill the needs of the growing population of older adults with cancer.

Check out the video by Dr. Gustavo Gössling talking about the abstract “Cancer Clinical Trials: Current Timelines of regulatory approval in Brazil and trends after the COVID-19 pandemic”, presented as a poster at the XXIV SBOC Congress, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The article highlights some important points, such as ANVISA timelines have slowly improved in the last decade but remain over 200 days; CONEP timelines showed a significant improvement until 2017, remained stable until 2020, and demonstrated significant worsening in 2022.

Prioritization, optimization, and decentralization of ethical evaluation may be alternatives to speed up these processes and further foster clinical research in Brazil.

Check out the video by Dr. Heloisa Resende talking about the abstract “Improving access to cancer clinical research in Brazil: recent advances and new opportunities. Expert opinions
from the 4th CURA meeting, São Paulo, 2023”, presented as a poster at the XXIV SBOC Congress, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A total of 16 experts pointed out achievements as shortening the time of regulatory processes involving Anvisa and CONEP, development of staff training programs, maintenance of the National Program of Oncological Attention (PRONON), and the foundation of qualified centers in North and Northeast Brazilian regions. Participants also highlighted the Brazilian need of being more competitive in the field, which requires optimizing ongoing policies.

The experts agreed that new strategies that allow patients to get clear information regarding participation in clinical trials and physician-directed programs getting further engagement of them are mandatory. Active and consistent reporting of the ongoing initiatives might help to propagate ongoing advances, increasing Brazilian participation in clinical cancer research.
