Different Autism Genes, Same Brain Signature

Scientists have identified a potential common brain signature across genetically distinct forms of autism.

Using whole-brain recordings, they found that autism models had difficulty adjusting expectations in response to changing environments.

These models showed over-reliance on the brain’s frontal cortex and underuse of sensory areas when making decisions.

As a result, sensory input was less effective in guiding behavior, and predictable stimuli were not processed efficiently.

The same neural circuit was implicated across three different autism models, suggesting it could underlie core behavioral traits.

This research may help link genetic diversity in autism to consistent neural and behavioral outcomes.
