What's that going up in the distance, you don't ask?
It's the "Rio Star" of course! 🎡

Inspired by London's own "Eye", at a height of 88m it will (reportedly) be - upon completion this year - Latin America's biggest big wheel.

A ride promises great views of the English Cemetery in the foreground!

Latest damage to the trees at the front of the cemetery. Already cleaned up by Prefeitura, but only on street side.

Estamos plantando 32 novas arvores no cemitério, para substituir arvores condenadas e cortadas.

In Christianity, All Souls' Day commemorates All Souls, the Holy Souls, or the Faithful Departed; that is, the souls of Christians who have died. Observing Christians typically remember deceased relatives on the day. There will be a service at the cemetery at 11.30am on Friday November 2.

The British Cemetery at Gamboa

The British Cemetery at Gamboa (Cemitério dos Ingleses) is one of the oldest British institutions in Rio. Until the signing of the 1810 Treaty of Commerce, non-Catholics were either buried at sea or in slave cemeteries or even along the beaches.

In 1810 Dom João VI ceded to the British a small piece of farmland formerly known as the “Forno de Cal” (lime kiln), along the shore of the bay. At that time the sea came up to the wall of the cemetery. Lord Strangford (Percy Clinton Sydney Sythe, sixth Viscount of Strangford) founded the cemetery, and the first burial took place in 1811.

Maria Graham, artist and writer, said of the Gamboa cemetery: “One of the most pleasant places I have ever seen, with wonderful views in every direction, and some magnificent trees...”

It is still a beautiful place, though the views are now a mixture of “Samba City” and “favela”. City Hall is developing the dock area, and has built the Cidade do Samba and an Olympic Village. The favela has been improved with a “favela-bairro” project, a “Favela Museum” and a new Municipal School. The cemetery is listed under the city’s Cultural Heritage as an historic site, by INEPAC - Institute Estadual de Patrimônio Cultural - http://www.inepac.rj.gov.br
