Breastmilk is so amazing!
One of the most fascinating findings in recent years is how the immune system responds to the saliva of the infant when a baby is sick. Researchers have found that immune factors in human milk increase when the baby is sick, even if the breastfeeding parent is not. It is hypothesized that as the baby suckles, the diameter of the ni**le pores expands and a mixture of milk and infant saliva flow in a reverse direction into the milk ducts where the maternal immune system begins to build immune factors against any pathogens in the infant’s saliva. In addition, when infant saliva mixes with milk it produces hydrogen peroxide. Katie Hinde outlines the mechanisms that enable the maternal immune system to react and respond to infant illness.
