AND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH
7TH NOVEMBER, 2017 VOLUME 4
The Ministry of Health has been experiencing an increase in the number of cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease among
young children since the beginning of October.
Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), is a contagious, generally mild disease caused by a group of viruses ( e.g. Enterovirus,
Coxsackie, Polioviruses, and Echoviruses).
HFMD mainly affects infants and young children (less than 5 years old) but can also occur in older children and adults. The
disease is spread from person to person through coughing; sneezing; sharing of cups and utensils; contact with infected
faeces (such as can happen when changing a diaper); and touching surfaces or objects which have been contaminated with
the virus. Outbreaks of HFMD often occur where young children are constantly in close contact with each other, such as
schools, day cares and nurseries.
Symptoms usually begin with a fever, sore throat, reduced appetite and a general feeling of being unwell. Within a day or
two after the first symptoms, a rash and bumps may appear on the soles of the feet, palms of the hands and inside the
mouth. A rash may also develop on the elbows, knees and buttocks. The bumps may blister but do not cause itching. Some
persons may have the disease but do not show any symptoms and can still pass the virus on to others. The illness is usually
mild and persons usually recover from the disease between 7 to 10 days.
There is no vaccine to protect against the viruses that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease. There is no specific treatment
for HFMD. Symptoms can be treated to provide relief. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used to manage the fever and
pain. Persons with the disease need to drink enough fluid to prevent dehydration. Cold liquids are usually preferable and
spicy or acidic foods should be avoided as they may cause discomfort.
Characterized by a brief febrile illness in children and typical
skin rash, with or without mouth ulcers.
Typically, the rash is papulovesicular and affects the palms or
soles of the feet, or both. In some cases the rash may be maculopapular
without vesicles, and may also involve the buttocks,
knees or elbows, particularly in younger children and infants.
The illness is usually mild and persons usually recover from the
disease between 7 to 10 days.

A new clinical trial shows that taking melatonin 3 mg at bedtime for 12 weeks is as effective for migraine prevention as amitriptyline 25 mg once daily in people with 2-8 migraine attacks monthly. Melatonin reduced headache days by 2.7 compared to 2.2 days for those receiving amitriptyline. Melatonin also cut migraine frequency in half for more patients than those taking amitriptyline and resulted in fewer side effects
AHA Warning: Some Supplements can Worsen Heart Failure
In a new scientific statement citing Natural Medicines, the American Heart Association (AHA) warns against the use of many supplements in people with heart failure. St. John's wort, grapefruit juice, ginseng, hawthorn, danshen, black cohosh, and green tea are among those discussed for their potential to cause significant interactions with commonly used heart failure medications. Other natural medicines, including aconite, gossypol, licorice, and yohimbine are noted for their potential to cause harmful cardiovascular effects, including high blood pressure and decreased heart rate. Ephedra, a banned substance in the US, is also warned against as it raises blood pressure, can stimulate the heart, and make chest pain and irregular heartbeat worse.
For more details on specific drug interactions associated with these supplements, please review our scientific monographs on each product, or try our interaction checker.
Having a great time in Andros at Pharmacy Week
Abaco Island Pharmacy would like to congratulate Avalon Charles-Miller on the conferment of a Master’s in Public Health, with a specialization in Management of Health Systems from the University of Liverpool.
Public health can be defined as the science of protecting and improving the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection and control of infectious diseases. It focuses on the health of the entire populations, which can be as small as a neighborhood or as big as an entire country. One of the man objectives of Public Health officials is achieving healthcare accessibility, equity and quality.
Public health professionals try to prevent problems from occurring mainly through the implementation of focused educational programs or recommending policies, as well as administering specific services and conducting research.
As pharmacists, our role in public health now extends beyond dispensing pharmaceuticals, a product oriented approach to a more patient oriented function ensuring the safe and efficacious medication usage to achieve positive patient outcomes. The recognition that pharmacists are still considered to be one of the most trustworthy profession, as well as, the most easily accessible health professional in many communities, and as such, have an integral role in facilitating the promotion of healthy lifestyles to improve and maintain good health within their communities.
Congratulations, Avalon Charles-Miller on the steps taken to promote health and wellbeing of the public.
