Bahamas Celebrates World Down Syndrome Day
us Not For us
Nassau, The Bahamas…March 21st, 2023 marks Down Syndrome Day in the Bahamas and throughout the World as declared by the United Nations for celebration and raising awareness on this day of persons with Down Syndrome.
Under the theme, “with us and not for us,” this year will focus on inclusion of those with Down Syndrome to every facet of our society and community and highlighting that we have moved on to a human rights approach as opposed to a charity-based one that attempted to take action “For” a person with Down Syndrome and not “With!”
“Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in every aspect of our daily lives and especially in policymaking and decision-making to enable them to have equal opportunity to education, employment, health, social and cultural activities and Government services exemplifies the rights-based approach, stated Ms. Nalini Bethel, Chairperson of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. “We are trying to level the playing field so that a person with a disability enjoys the same human rights as the rest of us and the same access to services!”
Local group, the Bahamas Down Syndrome Association’s President, Betty Taylor, stated that they are advocating for full and effective participation by their members in all decision-making concerning persons with Down Syndrome and to have the freedom to make their own choices. “Everyone has the right to be treated fairly,” she stated. “We are working not only to raise awareness but also to improve the lives of those with Down Syndrome in The Bahamas.” The Association is currently promoting Down Syndrome Day and encourages the public to buy their socks on sale at the Harbour Bay Plaza and wear the mis-matched socks on March 21st.
A proclamation declaring March 21st, 2023 as World Down Syndrome Day by the Hon. Philip
“Brave” Davis, Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas has been issued.
Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Obediah Wilchcombe stated that his Ministry is moving swiftly in support of the entire community of disabled persons, including those with Down Syndrome, towards a policy of inclusion, consulting on every policy decision to end discrimination on the basis of disability. “It is very important that we
each play a role in giving a helping hand to those who are in need but equally as important, to recognize that Persons with Disabilities have the same rights as those without disabilities,
and that everyone should be encouraged to fully participate in the social, economic and cultural life of The Bahamas,” he stated.
World Down Syndrome Day is around the corner! Let us celebrate and wear our socks in support!
