The Vision that came to Pass
Hello. My name is Marilyn Smith. I believe in dreams. The journey of Maternal Treasures began in the year 2008. I had just completed my Midwifery studies in 2007. I love the profession of Midwifery so much that I asked God how could I use this gift that He has given to me to be a blessing to the women of the world? At this time in my life I felt I needed to began to seriously look at my life and decide where I was going. Dr Myles Munroe had a role to play in my decision. He spoke a sermon that spoke to the fact that we are not here forever; and that we must make our lives impactful. He talked about the need for us to die empty. I always felt that Nursing was a safe haven for me in that it was a government job, I enjoyed it very much. Before this time, I never thought about having a business, because I always thought it was too risky for me. I looked around and there was not a private agency owned by a nurse to practice her skills freely. Then I thought about creating a nursing agency where I can serve women. Maternal Treasures was born in that year. I realized that we all are packed with great potential by God to make a difference in the world. An inherent gift we all possess to meet a need that others need. As the years went on I intentionally did my best to perfect my profession with joy. It was not easy. It was tough and as I worked, the Lord would give me ideas of how to set up this clinic for women. God knows our hearts desires and desires to be the Lord of everything we do. If we commit our plans to Him, they will succeed (Proverbs 16:3. I want everyone out there to not run after money, but find what you like to do and do it with all your might to make yourself valuable. The bible says your gift will make room for you.
My husband was always supportive of whatever I do. I truly believe that he is one of God’s greatest gifts to me. He always pushed me to be the best that I could be. He really is a part of the success you see. I thank God for him. After 34 years of Nursing, I thought about my career and the things that really mattered to me. I had to make a decision of which I did to retire in November 2018. This decision came with many challenges as I saw that I was spending less time creating Maternal Treasures and more time in my role as Nursing Officer I. On January 28th , 2019 to serve our community. We . Maternal Treasures Parent Care Center is an exciting, dynamic, new pregnancy resource center that assists in meeting the essential needs of women and their families. It was established based on a community need while working as a midwife. I saw where clients were not provided suffient time to be educated about their conditions mainly because of either the quick turnover in the unit or staffing challenges. This relates especially to the breastfeeding mothers who were going home. As you know breastfeeding, & the post partum period can certainly have many challenges for the new mom.
Lack of breastfeeding and childbirth classes in the community was something I saw & spoke with the clients who commented that it is something they will support if it comes on stream. This was true for most of the first time mothers. The majority of them have expressed how frightened they are when they come to hospital. Knowledge is power. If we educate our population to know that of course there will be fears but becoming knowledgeable is the first step in easing and reducing the fear. Where are the midwives? The majority in hospitals working with pregnant women which is great, but where are the ones that are needed in the community to offer a helping hand to the patients who have gone home? Midwives should be allowed to share their practice in the community since they care for women throughout their lifespan.
It is the first of its kind & is managed by a Nurse Midwife, Grief and lactation Specialist . At Maternal Treasures Parent Care Center:
