I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Graham Cates on receiving the Trailblazer Award at the 54th Annual Medical Association of The Bahamas Conference—an honor that is both well-deserved and deeply reflective of his impact.

Dr. Cates has not only built Family Medicine Center from the ground up, but has also transformed it into a leading force in healthcare—bringing together exceptional physicians, advanced technology, and comprehensive services ranging from MRI and CT imaging to mammography, bone marrow diagnostics, and beyond. His vision has elevated the standard of care in our country.

What truly sets him apart, however, is his leadership.

It is rare to encounter a leader who fosters growth without micromanagement, who welcomes ideas even in their earliest stages, and who actively mentors others through the complexities of both medicine and business. Dr. Cates creates a space where questions are encouraged, challenges can be shared without judgment, and learning is continuous.

Over the past three years, working alongside him has been both a privilege and a transformative experience. I have grown tremendously—not only as a physician, but as a professional—and much of that growth is a direct result of his guidance and example.

To me, he is the very definition of a trailblazer—not only for what he has built, but for how he leads.

Congratulations again, Dr. Cates, on this remarkable achievement. Thank you for your vision, your mentorship, and your unwavering commitment to excellence. Your leadership continues to inspire us all.

As we close our Understanding Dementia: From Brain Health to Real-Life Care series, we reflect on an important final conversation — supporting caregivers and planning for the future.

Caregivers play a vital role in the journey of dementia, and empowering them with knowledge, resources, and encouragement is essential.

Here is the final video recap.

How can you care for someone without losing yourself?

🧘🏽‍♀️ Protect your mental and spiritual health daily. Even 10–15 minutes of prayer, meditation, journaling, or quiet reflection helps you reset and stay grounded.

🗓️ Schedule your own care like an appointment. Exercise, devotion time, rest, medical visits — put them on the calendar and honor them.

🤝 Accept help early. Family, church members, respite services, or support groups are not signs of weakness — they’re sustainability tools.

🧠 Stay connected to your identity. Keep at least one hobby, friendship, or activity that reminds you who you are beyond caregiving.

🌿 Watch for burnout signs. Irritability, exhaustion, resentment, and poor sleep are signals to pause and recalibrate — not push harder.

Dementia care must be holistic.

True care supports the medical, physical, and social needs of the person living with dementia. When we care for the whole person, we protect brain health and quality of life.

How do we safely manage behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia without overusing antipsychotics?

🌡️ Look for the trigger first. Check for pain, infection, constipation, dehydration, or medication side effects before labeling it “behavior.”

💊 Treat pain proactively. Unrecognized pain is a major cause of agitation.

🗣️ Use validation, not confrontation. Instead of correcting delusions, acknowledge emotions and provide reassurance.

🕰️ Maintain structured routines. Predictable daily schedules and consistent caregivers reduce anxiety and sundowning.

⚖️ Reserve antipsychotics for severe risk only. Use the lowest effective dose, shortest duration, with regular review and clear indication from your doctor.
