World Braille Day
World Braille Day is celebrated every year on January 4th, honoring the birthday of Louis Braille, the inventor of the braille system. This special day raises awareness about the importance of braille as a means of communication for those who are blind or visually impaired. It emphasizes the significance of literacy and accessibility in creating equal opportunities for everyone.

Who Was Louis Braille?
Louis Braille (1809–1852) was a French educator and innovator who lost his eyesight at the age of three due to an accident. Despite this, he displayed incredible determination and brilliance. At just 15 years old, Louis invented the braille writing system, a tactile code that uses raised dots to represent letters, numbers, and punctuation. His groundbreaking invention transformed the lives of millions of visually impaired individuals, enabling them to read and write independently.

Why Thank Louis Braille?
Louis Braille’s work revolutionized accessibility and remains a cornerstone of inclusivity for people with visual impairments. His invention gave blind individuals the power to access education, communicate effectively, pursue careers, and fully participate in society. The braille system is still used worldwide today in books, signage, and digital devices, ensuring equality and independence for the blind and visually impaired community.
Let’s honor and thank Louis Braille for his invaluable contribution to humanity and celebrate his legacy on every World Braille Day! 🌟

*The of Tandin Dorji*

In the unpredictable journey of life, we often encounter challenges and sorrows that we cannot foresee. Such is the story of Tandin Dorji, a young boy whose life took an unexpected turn when he was just two years old.

Tandin was born into a world filled with happiness and love, surrounded by his caring parents, Apa and Ama, and an elder brother named Ugyen Wangchuk. His mother's affection for him knew no bounds. But at the tender age of two, Tandin's world was shattered by a sequence of events that he could never have predicted.

Tandin's father, originally from Paro, took the family to attend an annual ritual there. After the ceremony, his grandmother offered for him to stay with her and his grandfather, but he vehemently refused. His heart longed to be with his beloved parents. Tragically, during their journey back home, an unforeseen accident charged his life into darkness. Miraculously, he survived the accident, but his body was forever changed.

After the accident, Tandin and his family were admitted to Thimphu Hospital, where they faced not only the physical and emotional trauma but also the challenge of being far from home with no one to turn to. Their recovery came in the form of an American tourist named Linda, whose generous assistance, particularly towards Tandin, was invaluable. However, the accident left Tandin with half of his body paralyzed.

A year later, Tandin was discharged from the hospital, and for a brief period, life seemed to regain some semblance of normality. He was back with his loving parents, cherishing each moment. However, life's unpredictability was far from over.

As the saying goes, "we cannot predict our future." One fateful morning, Tandin's family found themselves at a crossroads. With tears streaming down his face, he clung to his mother, knowing he had no say in the decision. His father took his elder brother, and they departed, leaving a heartbroken six-year-old Tandin with his mother.

For the next three years, Tandin remained with his mother, relegated to a wheelchair, watching other children walk to school from his vantage point on the roadside. His heartfelt desire was to walk and study like his peers. It was during this challenging period that he reconnected with Linda, the same tourist who had helped him earlier.

Linda made a life-changing promise to Tandin; she would sponsor his education until he completed class ten. He attended Khasadrapchhu Middle Secondary School up to class seven, with his cousin brother providing much-needed care. Despite the daily struggles, Tandin never gave up on his studies, studying diligently and bringing joy to others with his singing and sharing of school supplies.

Tandin's talents extended beyond academics; he excelled in singing and composing music. He achieved first position in his class for both sixth and seventh grades. Despite the hardships he faced, he actively participated in various extracurricular activities such as singing competitions, essay writing, tsangmo competitions, and Dzongkha debates, consistently leaving his mark on his school life.

However, another cruel twist of fate awaited him. A fall from his wheelchair resulted in a fractured right leg, leading to another hospitalization and a year-long hiatus from his studies. He had just completed class seven when this setback occurred.

Upon his return, Tandin faced the grim reality of having no one to look after him. He contemplated giving up on his education, believing it was impossible to continue. Yet, deep down, he harbored a profound ambition, one that he was determined to pursue despite the odds.

The unpredictable journey of Tandin Dorji had been filled with unforeseen challenges and heartaches. Yet, with unwavering determination and an indomitable spirit, he continued to strive for a brighter future.

"The power of determination and perseverance in overcoming obstacles."

Dr. Sanga Dorji was born and raised in Trongsa, Bhutan. At the age of 8, he lost his eyesight, which was a difficult time for him and his family. Despite this setback, Sanga was determined to live a full and meaningful life.

He attended Muenselling Institute, Khaling, where he learned how to read and write in Braille. Later, he went to Jigme Sherubling Central School, where he continued his studies and excelled academically. Sanga had a natural talent for learning and was passionate about helping others.

After graduating high school, he was awarded a scholarship by the Royal Government of Bhutan to study physiotherapy in London. There, he spent four years learning how to help people with muscle and bone problems. Sanga was the first person from Bhutan to study physiotherapy, and he was very proud of this achievement.

When Sanga returned to Bhutan in 1994, he became the first physiotherapist in the country. He worked hard to help people with disabilities, and his gentle and kind approach with his patients was well known. He enjoyed listening to them and making them feel comfortable.

In his free time, Sanga liked to explore nature, taking long walks in the forest and hiking up hills. He found peace and tranquility in the natural world and felt rejuvenated by it.

Sanga and his team, who have disabilities, united and established the Disabled People's Organization in Bhutan, which is run by and for people with disabilities. Sanga exerted great effort to assist others and earned the admiration and respect of numerous individuals. He presently holds the position of chairperson at DPO Bhutan.

Throughout his life, Sanga faced many challenges, but he never let his disability hold him back. He was an inspiration to all those who knew him, and his dedication and hard work will always be remembered.

Dr. Sanga's story teaches us that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible.

Persons with Blindness can still dance by feeling the music and rhythm with their body and using their sense of touch and sound to move. They may not be able to see the dance moves or the people around them, but they can still enjoy and participate in dancing.
