The National Medical Services, Ministry of Health in collaboration with the International Extremity Project (IEP) led by Dr. Bruce Allen Lehnert, a Podiatrist from the USA will be conducting International lower extremity and Dental Camp at JDWNRH from 22nd December to 29th December.

The IEP team in Bhutan will focus primarily on young adults and children suffering from lower extremity deformities that hinder normal extremity function. These conditions, when addressed surgically or through therapeutic intervention, can significantly reduce both physical and social barriers, thereby improving the overall quality of life for the affected individuals and their families.

Along with the Extremity camp the team is introducing the dental component in Bhutan for the first time led by Dr. Richard Tsun-Hsun Kao, a world-renowned periodontist.

The International Dental Camp aims to raise awareness about periodontal health and related diseases. As dental caries become increasingly well-controlled, the focus is shifting toward periodontal care. This initiative will support dental professionals in adapting to these evolving priorities. To achieve its goals, the camp will feature lecture sessions in the morning and live surgical demonstrations and supervise surgical training for dental staff at JDWNRH in the afternoon

On 13th December 2025, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital and Thromde Health Centre, proudly hosted the Civil Service Award Ceremony. The President of JDWNRH formally conferred the Civil Service Awards upon the distinguished recipients in recognition of their dedicated service.

This year, a total of 56 civil servants were honored, comprising 8 recipients of the Lifetime awards, 11 recipients of the Gold Medal, 13 recipients of the Silver Medal, and 24 recipients of the Bronze Medal.
The ceremony concluded successfully, reflecting the collective dedication and commitment of all those involved in its organization and ex*****on.

We were deeply honored to welcome Dr. Satoru Sumitsuji, Guest Professor, Cardiovascular/Future Medicine, Osaka University, Japanโ€”an international expert in CTO interventions.

This program, organized by Dr. Mahesh Gurung and the Cath Lab team, aims to strengthen local capacity and bring advanced coronary treatment closer to our people. The team also had the privilege to meet with the president.

Endoscopic endonasal trans-sphenoidal removal of pituitary tumor or removal of pituitary tumor through the nose, represents one of the most transformative milestones in the evolution of modern neurosurgery and skull-base surgery.

This complex surgery was performed in JDWNRH on 19/11/2025 by Dr Tandin Wangyel Dorji, Neurosurgeon, Dr Kencho Rinzin, ENT specialist and Dr Tandin Tshomo, Neuro-anesthetist along with their respective teams. The surgery was 3 hours.
This complex procedure was performed on a 45 yrs old woman with a headache. Meticulous preoperative investigations like brain MRI, hormone analysis and ophthalmic evaluations were carried out. A giant pituitary tumor extending from sellar to suprasellar region compressing the optic chiasm with low hormone secretion. Some changes in vision were also seen.

Endoscopic endonasal trans-sphenoidal removal of pituitary tumors is a minimally invasive technique that utilizes a nasal corridor to access the sphenoid sinus and sella turcica without external incisions. Using a rigid endoscope, the surgeon obtains a panoramic, high-definition view of the sellar and parasellar structures, enabling precise identification and resection of pituitary adenomas with minimal disruption to surrounding neurovascular anatomy.

Dr. Tandin Tshomo was the lead anesthetist. Dr Kencho Rinzin performed the bilateral sphenoidectomy and posterior spurectomy. Then Dr Tandin Wangyel Dorji performed the excision of tumor and skull base reconstruction using multilayered technique with fat graft and fascia lata harvested from the patientโ€™s thigh. The surgery was uneventful and successfully done. Postoperative recovery was fast and with no complications.

This approach allows improved visualization of tumor extension into suprasellar or cavernous sinus compartments compared with traditional microscopic methods. Clinically, it is associated with reduced nasal morbidity, less postoperative discomfort, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery. The technique has become a standard of care worldwide due to its safety profile, enhanced tumor removal rates, and ability to address complex sellar and skull-base lesions. Its introduction marked a major advancement in pituitary surgery and continues to shape modern endoscopic skull-base practice.

This landmark achievement at JDWNRH demonstrates the hospitalโ€™s growing expertise in advanced neurosurgical techniques and sets a new benchmark for minimally invasive skull-base surgery in Bhutan hence reducing referrals outside the country.

Gyalyum Kesang Choeden Wangchuck National Eye Centre, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital, observed World Sight Day on 22 November 2025 in commemoration of the 70th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

This solemn yet joyous occasion paid tribute to His Majesty the Great Fourthโ€™s enduring vision and the guiding philosophy of Gross National Happiness, which continue to inspire our unwavering commitment to eliminating preventable blindness and safeguarding the gift of sight for all Bhutanese. This yearโ€™s World Sight Day themeโ€”emphasizing equitable access to eye care for allโ€”resonated deeply with the principles of GNH, reminding us that true national well-being is rooted in the health, happiness, and dignity of every individual.

The ceremony was graced by the Director of the Department of Clinical Services, National Medical Services, alongside Heads of Clinical Departments, Unit Heads, and other distinguished guests. The complex procedure was performed on a 22-year-old woman with neuromuscular scoliosis by Dr. Kuenzang Wangdi, Director and Spine Surgeon, together with Dr. Letho, Spine Surgeon. The procedure took almost 4 and half hours.

This landmark surgery required meticulous pre-operative planning, advanced intra-operative decision-making and seamless coordination across multiple clinical teams. The team from anaesthesia, nursing, medical imaging, and peri-operative care played essential roles throughout the process. The surgical team applied precise deformity-correction techniques and customised spinal instrumentation suited to the patientโ€™s neuromuscular condition, with close attention to neurological safety and post-operative rehabilitation.

The successful outcome represents a major step forward for JDWNRHโ€™s capacity to manage complex spinal deformities. It reduces the need for patients to seek specialised care abroad, enhances local expertise, and strengthens the hospitalโ€™s role as a national referral and training centre for advanced orthopaedic and spine services.

JDWNRH congratulates the surgical team and all supporting staff for their commitment and professionalism. This achievement marks the beginning of expanded, safer and more comprehensive spine care for patients across Bhutan.
