BHUTAN CONDUCTS SECOND ROUND OF KIDNEY TRANSPLANTS, MARKING MAJOR HEALTHCARE MILESTONE

Bhutan’s healthcare system is achieving a significant milestone as a team of Bhutanese and team from Rajavithi Hospital, Thailand is conducting the second round of kidney transplants at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH), signalling the country’s growing independence in organ transplantation. This follows Bhutan’s first successful kidney transplant in September 2023, conducted by the same collaborative team from JDWNRH and Rajavithi Hospital.
The first successful kidney transplant at JDWNRH, conducted earlier with Rajavithi Hospital’s support, had already set a precedent, demonstrating that such advanced procedures could be carried out effectively within Bhutan.
May 05, 2025 - In a remarkable display of medical excellence , Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) today successfully performed the first surgery of this second round its second kidney transplant, with a 39-year-old wife donating to her 44-year-old husband. The procedure marks another milestone in Bhutan’s growing transplant capabilities, supported by experts from Rajavithi Hospital, Thailand.
The medical team prepares to perform another transplant of their second successful kidney transplant series tomorrow at JDWNRH.

The Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) commemorates its 8th Foundation Day today which coincides with the Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The occasion was observed with the offering of butter lamps and the launch of the Annual Report 2024. The event was graced by the presence of the Chief Guest, Lam Ngyedrub, Mr. Dorji Wangchuk, Officiating Director, Department of Clinical Services along with the Medical Superintendent, Heads of Department and other health officials.
The Annual Report 2024 serves as a vital document, highlighting the hospital's key achievements over the past year and reaffirming its steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare services to our people.

Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) in collaboration with Rajavithi Hospital, Thailand conducted the Thai-Bhutan Laparoscopic and Endoscopy Camp from 21st to 23rd April 2025. The Camp was facilitated by and conducted in the Department of Surgery and Endoscopy unit of JDWNRH. It marked a significant milestone in Bhutan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen advanced surgical and endoscopic services. This collaborative initiative brought together expert faculty from Thailand’s Rajavithi Hospital and Bhutan’s own experienced surgeons and advanced endoscopists to deliver a high-impact program centered on clinical excellence, hands-on training, and institutional capacity building.
A total of 93 procedures were performed over three days which includes Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), Upper GI Endoscopy, Colonoscopy.
One of the most significant achievements of this camp was the successful performance of 4 Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) procedures—the first ever conducted in Bhutan. These were made possible with the support of Fujifilm, who provided the necessary equipment for demonstration purposes. These patients who would otherwise have required referral outside the country were managed locally with expert guidance—a true leap forward in surgical gastroenterological diagnostics for Bhutan.
The camp also saw a complex Whipple’s procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy) performed for a patient with pancreatic cancer, jointly managed by local and Thai surgeons. This case exemplified the successful collaboration in high-complexity surgical care and capacity building.
The camp also provided capacity building platform for surgeons from district hospitals receiving hands on exposure under the mentorship of both local and Thai faculty which will support the long-term goal of building a nationwide network of skilled surgical professionals.
Director General, Deputy Director, Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health, Director, Deputy Director, Rajavithi Hospital, Bangkok also visited JDWNRH and had fruitful discussions with the Heads of Departments on institutional collaborations, surgical and endoscopic fellowship opportunities, academic exchanges and research partnerships including strategic planning for future joint initiatives.
JDWNRH extends special thanks to Professor Thawee Ratanachuek Ek of Rajavithi Hospital, whose unwavering support and mentorship since 2007 have been instrumental in developing advanced endoscopic and laparoscopic capabilities in Bhutan. His long-standing commitment continues to inspire and elevate Bhutan’s surgical landscape and further enhance healthcare system in the country.

With the utmost honor and deepest respect, JDWNRH solemnly announces the passing of Dr. IK Mahanta on 26th March 2025. A true pioneer in medical laboratory sciences, Dr. I.K Mahanta dedicated his life to the development of laboratory services in Bhutan.
Arriving in Bhutan in the 1970s, Dr. I.K Mahanta played a crucial role in establishing laboratory services at JDWNRH. His unwavering commitment to healthcare and education led him to train hundreds of skilled laboratory technicians, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s medical field. His contributions to Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan and his lifelong service to the Bhutanese people will always be remembered.
In honor of his remarkable contributions, the laboratory family held a Moenlam and lit butter lamps for Dr. I.K Mahanta at Simtokha Dzong on the 7th day after his passing, on 2nd April 2025. This solemn ceremony was a heartfelt tribute, with laboratory professionals from around the world, along with friends and family in Bhutan, coming together to pay their respects and offer their prayers.
Dr. I.K Mahanta’s legacy of dedication, compassion, and service will continue to inspire generations to come. His absence will be deeply felt, but his impact will forever remain in the lives he touched. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
